Differences in the value of money!
The value of money means different things to different people. When I was younger and began making my own money, I would save most of it, and spend the rest on clothes, and entertainment. My saving portion was much bigger than my spending portion. I was putting away to help pay for college. This was enforced by my dad when I was very little. You are going to college, so you will need to save money.
Money was not used for anything luxurious. I did not buy things that I did not need. I was brought up to not throw it away on whatever I wanted. If I truly wanted something, I put away some money to the side every week, until I was able to pay cash for the item. I was not raised in a microwave society. Get it and get it quick, is the motto of most people today!
While raising my children, I tried to enforce this idea of putting away money for something they wanted on a weekly basis, until they could pay cash for it. I discouraged my older kids to put something on a credit card, unless they were able to pay it all off when the bill arrived later that month.
My older son and I had a conversation recently. He told me how he was living meagerly, while living in college. Now, I always received his debit statement at the end of the month. I viewed all the fast food places, and places he would spend his money. When I brought this up to him, my son informed me that he had to go out for lunch on the days he worked. My son would always go to Chipotle’s for lunch, during his work break. I asked why he did not bring a sandwich or a lunch with him. He did not have a good answer for this. I let him know that when I went to college, I only ate out once a week. He keeps telling me times are different!
What is different is how you view the value of money . When it comes to spending money, being frugal has never changed. Being on a budget, and respecting the budget has never changed. If you have to watch your spending habits, you have to adjust for this, like making a lunch and bringing it to the job! I am tired of my son informing me that times are different when it comes to spending money. You still have rent, bills, food, entertainment, clothes, and car payments. Time has not changed any of these responsibilities. What time has changed is how a person views the value of money, and their spending habits.
