Something we all have, unless they chose not to be part of your life is parents as teachers. If they did choose to be part of your life; hopefully, they did the best job. There is nobook or course that can teach anyone how to parent. Parenting is often a learning experience on the job only.
I do not know about yourparents, but mine had some quirky notions. They would tell us “Do not cross your eyes or they will stay that way.” No that is not true, but they believed it to be so. Another thing they would always say is, “Do not sit close to the television, it will hurt your eyes.” Honestly, I think they had an eye fetish!
If my sisters and I did not finish our food at the dinner table, my parents would always remind us of the starving people in the world. We were expected to eat as a family, do the dishes as a family, and clean up as a family. When my mother called us to the dinner table, we were to be on time!
How many families today eat dinner as a family? I know my children will take their plates and consume their dinner wherever they want to consume it. When I grew up, that was not allowed, and we always said grace before meals. When my parents told me to do something, I had to do it right away. Not tomorrow, not in a couple of hours, but right away! If I ask my children to do something, they take their sweet time to complete what I ask them to do. Notice, my parents told me to do something, and I ask my kids to do something.
My parents were respected and never took no for anything. My kids love me, but they do not show the same awe that I held for my parents. It is not just my husband and I that this happens to. Although, I do not treat my children as friends, my husband and I have never had the same respect level as our parents held from us. Maybe, it was more fear than respect. After all, if I did not do what my parents asked me to do, I would get spanked. Today, spanking is looked on as child abuse. I do not know if society has helped parents as teachers in this day and age!
