Hoarders

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Hoarders are people who cannot let go of anything!  That anything consists of material goods.  It is an obsessive compulsive disorder, and when they buy they do not always use the stuff.  It just stays and accumulates around the house.  My girlfriend had a cousin who passed away, and she had to clean out his house.  He was a hoarder.

The cousin was obsessed with people stealing his stuff.  My girlfriend had to be careful, because she would find pins in goods, and she did not want to get hurt.  Well, let’s face it, wehoarders all have a tendency to save things and hold on to stuff longer than we should.

If you look at the picture of the kitchen, it has stuff on the counters, the stove, and the floor.  The stuff on the floor is piled up!  How can that person use their kitchen!  Just think what the rest of the house looks like!

Most of us are not hoarders, but we do have a tendency to collect junk or hold onto stuff longer than we should.  So to cure us nonhoarders, I would say keep a picture like the image you see here on this page.  If you have a picture of a hoarding incident, you can bring it with you to the room you want to purge of items.  Just looking at the picture, should motivate anyone to start getting rid of stuff that is not necessary, and you are not using anymore.  Sometimes it takes something so awful to give us a jump start to get rid of unnecessary things!

Think of all the school work, pictures that we keep of our kids!  Think of all the clothes that do not fit you anymore, yet you hold onto them just in case.   When you get rid of things, it actually mentally lightens you.  Keeping stuff that you do not use, and you will never use, and you do not even look at it for memories, is unnecessary!  The saying, “Don’t sweat the small stuff, it’s all small stuff,” needs to be transitioned to, “Don’t keep the small stuff, it’s all small stuff.”  Getting rid of small stuff, means to keep on it!  Every three months, go through your house, your closets, your garage, and get rid of things you never use.  If you do not get into the habit of purging stuff from your life, you too, can become a hoarder!
