Today, September 11 2001, is a day that will live forever, in the minds of Americans! When something happens that big in someones lives, you never forget what you were doing when it occurred! For me, I just sent my youngest off to school, after his being home several days with a bad cough, and wondering did I do the right thing! Then, I turned on the TV to Good Morning America, and saw a plane going into some buildings. The news commentator made mention, that the pilot must have made a mistake, and then ten minutes later a second plane blasted into the buildings.
The bottom dropped out!
All I knew was the bottom dropped out of my sense of reality as I watched the second plane crash into the towers. Even I knew at this point that this was no mistake! I went outside and looked up at the sky thinking any of us could get attacked anywhere!
A sense of unity!
The biggest thing to come out of September 11 2001, was the sense of camaraderie and unity amongst Americans in reaching out and wanting to help! I remember our fire department sending out two firemen to New York to help out with the mess left behind after the buildings went down. Throughout the country, towns and cities were sending their firemen and policemen to New York to help out.
In my town, our firemen were out by the stoplights with their boots, collecting money for the victims of September 11 2001. People were baking cookies and giving it to our firemen and policemen just to show their thanks for all that they did.
All I remember is the sense of sadness and shock that overwhelmed most people. It felt that we were being exposed, like walking naked in the streets. The terrorists that attacked America, helped unite our country. We reached out to help others in need. We showed the world how to behave when people have done an atrocious act toward them. We all asked, what can I do to help!!!
I was never more proud of being an American, and of its citizens. When the going gets tough, the tough got going. So, I would like to take the time today to write about, think about, pray about, all the victims of the terrorists, and the effects they had on their families and their country.
