With the current battle between Apple and Samsung seemingly over, pending Samsung’s inevitable appeals, the stage has been set for several landmark developments in the high-tech industry. Apple, Google and Microsoft are among the big names who will be battling for the consumer this fall and through the lucrative holiday season. Huge money is at stake as these companies battle for the scarce consumer dollar in this recessionary period. The consumer should be the ultimate winner as there will be some amazing new high-tech products for the fall of 2012.
Apple
Apple will be introducing the iPhone 5 this fall although the exact date remains a bit of a mystery. After its court victory over Samsung in the patent smartphone wars, the iPhone 5 should be a best-seller with a lot of market buzz. However, it’s hard to say how much the iPhone 5 will revolutionize the marketplace since it’s the 5th version of Apple’s smartphone. The first iPhone took the world by storm but there is the law of diminishing returns which would state that each new version of an original product will have less influence on the marketplace. The iPhone 5 will likely be thinner and faster than its previous version but any radical new design is unlikely. Still, Apple’s victory over Samsung will give it breathing room over the Google Android smartphone system. However, Google Fiber might give Apple a lot of headaches over the Apple TV, which hasn’t made a huge dent in the marketplace yet. This has given Google an opening for its Fiber system.
The ‘iPad mini’ will be launched in the fall as well although the timing is likely after the introduction of the iPhone 5. The Nexus 7 tablet as well as the Amazon Kindle Fire led the way for Apple’s new version of its successful iPad but it will remain to be seen how well-received the iPad mini will be at its launch. Here, Apple is seen as being forced to adapt to its competitors’ products, unlike its previous status as a trailblazer. The iPad was a radical AND revolutionary product while the iPad mini is more of a ‘catch-up’ tablet. Apple couldn’t shrug off the Kindle and Kobo tablets and is likely spooked by the Nexus but its dominance of the tablet market should ensure a successful launch of the iPad mini. The iPhone, iPad mini and regular iPad gives the consumers pretty well any size they want for a portable mobile device!
Microsoft
The war between Google, Samsung and Apple has left Microsoft a bit behind in the high-tech news field. However, the Surface tablet and Windows 8 will bring Microsoft back to the headlines. Microsoft has always been known as a software company but it’s new Surface tablet/desktop computer may be the radical new design that takes the high-tech world by storm. The design of the Surface tablet means that it can function as a portable tablet and as a laptop while Windows 8 promises a whole new paradigm in touch-screen control. It remain to be seen if the Surface tablet can overtake the iPad but Microsoft has an extensive track record in the high-tech world and its huge marketing push will unleash a torrent of buzz. Windows 8 will create a lot of hype on its own, bringing Microsoft some much-needed exposure after all of the media talk about Apple, Google and Samsung.
