New Years Resolution

It’s that time of year again when people will be making those New Year’s Resolutions. The quit smoking and lose weight/get fit resolutions have to be the 2 most frequently made resolutions at this time of year.  January is the month that people decide to make a new start for their lives.  I have been there myself but now I don’t make those “wishful” resolutions anymore.  We have to change our thinking.  Why we do we want to make a change in our lives?

Did you know that 95% of the people who make a resolution, break it.  A lot of people don’t even make a NYR because they know for years and years their not going to follow through so why even make one.  Who wants to disappoint yourself, or be upset with yourself.  Why even bother to set a standard for this year when you know it’s going to be the same as last year.

What is it that make us make a resolution?

What does it really take to make it happen?  Things don’t make us happy.  You can get all the money or things you want but that is not what really makes you happy.  The secret to real happiness is “Progress”.  Change is automatic.  Work on Progress.  If you really want to make Progress then you need to really look at your life in a different way.  I need to take control of this problem and not just hope it’s going to work out like people do with a resolution.  Isn’t that what they’re really doing at the beginning of the year.  They say, such and such, is my  resolution at the beginning of the year but they are basically telling you their wish list.  They hope it all comes together and then they call it a resolution but they don’t know what a resolution is.  When you resolve something to have a resolution is to RESOLVE IT.  When you resolve this is how it’s going to be.  That’s when you cut off any possibility except the thing you’ve committed to.

What does it take to have a lasting change in your life?

First step you have to have a Vision.  A Vision for what you really truly want.  Not what you think you want or what you should have.  When you say I’m going to stop eating sugar, or I’m going to quit smoking, or  I’m going to lose 10 lbs.  This in not very inspiring.  It’s not telling you what your going to get, it’s only telling you what your not going to do.  It’s hard to move forward with that.

1. A Vision is what your here to create.  A vision that really works is one that excites you.  It has to be a compelling vision.

2. You need strong enough reasons to push yourself when times get tough and you want to quit.

3. Review and feel it everyday.  If you review it enough it becomes part of you.  Your brain will become incredibly acute at noticing anything to get you moving forward.  So that’s the power.

So you know what people with a NYR do.  They come up with something they kind of want, if not a compelling vision, they don’t really have strong enough reasons and they never review it again until they notice that they broke what they said they want to happen make happen.  They didn’t really resolve .  If you resolve you got the vision, it’s compelling, you review it daily and you feel it, you envision it and you experience it .  Simple as it sounds.

What does this really mean?  Raise Your Standards.  Lasting change is different from than a goal.  You don’t always get your goals.  Your always get your standards.  Think of it as everybody in life gets their musts, they don’t get their shoulds.  Think about it.  Most people have a list of shoulds.  When you decide that something is a must for you, an absolute must and you cut off any possibility, I’m going to find the way or make the way, human beings when they resolve things and they have to make a real resolution inside themselves, which they raise the standards, they make it a must, they find the way.

Have you ever had an area in your life where you raised the standards and your life has never been the same?  You did something for years then one day something happened, something clicked you over, something took you over that tipping point and inside yourself you said NO MORE.  Something inside you shifted and what was a should became a must and you’ve never gone back.  And notice it didn’t take any will power any more because somewhere when we click and we make this a must we attach ourselves to it.  It becomes part of our identity.  Human beings absolutely follow through on who they believe they are.  We need to stay consistent with who we define ourselves as.

So when thinking of making that NYR think about the 3 points above and weather your mind is saying I should or I must.
