Romney Failed but Why?

Before I begin the discussion on why Romney failed, I would like to paint a picture of a past experience that might be helpful in delivering a point. I would like to go back to my school years where I remember being a hardcore San Antonio Spurs fan who would often talk trash back and forth with my friends about who would win the championship that year. Particularly, in 2004 the Spurs were up on the Lakers two games to zero and were nearing twenty straight wins. I was full of confidence; in fact I was nearly sure that the Spurs were going to win the series. However, to my surprise the Lakers tied the series. It then became a very tight series to where the Lakers ended up winning the series thanks to a shot that occurred within .4 seconds.

The next couple of days were very hard for me. I tried to ignore my friends and not talk about basketball. I tried to ignore the sports media as I couldn’t stomach to hear them talk about what went wrong for the Spurs and how the Lakers completely destroyed them. I didn’t need to listen to what the media had to say, I already knew what went wrong and it was not rocket science. The reason why the Lakers won was simply because they could get more points on the board than the other team.

An Eery Feeling When Romney Failed

I had a similar feeling come over me last night as I was watching the election. After the first debate it appeared that Romney had a great chance of winning the election. However, as the exit polls were coming in my heart began to sink and it became clear that the Republican party and Romney failed. When the election was finally called I turned off the T.V. as I could no longer listen to the media discuss what went wrong for Romney. This morning however, I didn’t continue to ignore the media, instead like a masochist, I dove directly into all of the reports. To my surprise, I learned what all of the media was saying about why Romney lost and nearly all of it I disagreed with.

The kind of consensus view that was given was in regards to the Republicans not reaching out to minorities more. The consensus thought was if the Republicans just reached out a bit more to women and minority voters, this election would have gone differently. At first this sounded plausible but after much thought I began to remember how at the convention the Republicans clearly boasted the ethnic diversity of their party during prime time. The Republican Party was not seen as just a white old man’s party as there were men and women who were of mix backgrounds (some who were even children of immigrants) speaking about conservative principles and values (including the half Mexican Romney himself).

I also recalled from personal experience, knowing briefly about the plans and people who were hired on to the Republican ticket to help interact with the Hispanic community. Now perhaps the Republicans could have even hired more people and could have done more events or advertisements to help reach out to the Hispanic community, but I can’t see this changing the results among Hispanics or other minorities that greatly. Even with a decent effort, Romney failed.

In regard to specifically the women voters, Mitt and the Republican Party tried very hard to court them. In fact, until election night, it appeared that Mitt was doing something right as it had been reported that Obama’s lead among women was nearly gone. It is even rumored that one of the main reasons Romney threw the third debate was in order to score more points with the women voters. And again, the Republican convention constantly flaunted all of their conservative women who spoke eloquently and represented their party well.

For these reasons I can’t imagine that women voters didn’t vote for Romney because the party wasn’t trying to reach out to them. Similarly, for the same reasons I do not believe the Republicans got obliterated from Hispanic voters in virtue of them not trying hard enough to showcase conservative Hispanics and their reasons for being conservatives.  Which by the way Rubio comes to mind as a perfect example of this. I believe the issue is much deeper. The real issue of why Romney failed, is much deeper than this artificial conflict of race or gender.

The deeper reason of why the Republicans and Romney failed, is not that they didn’t sensitively and eloquently attempt to convey their positions cautiously to these groups. In fact, I remember thinking that if I heard one more Republican repeat for the 20th time how they were for legal immigration and how they were personally a son or a grandson of an immigrant, I was going to throw something at the wall.  I do not believe the deep reason for explaining why Romney failed, has to do a lack of TV commercials that responded to this need or the amount of women they had speak at the convention. What is the deeper reason then?

The deeper reason is that as a majority, these groups fundamentally disagree with conservatism and the application of conservative values to their issues. For women, most single women in America believe that they should have the right to murder their unborn child. Likewise, most Hispanic voters in this election do not agree with how Republicans want to go about dealing with illegals in this country. Since the Hispanic vote and the women vote are all growing, it appears that the conservatives (including conservative blacks, Hispanics, and women) are out numbered and alas, the reason why Obama won and why Romney failed.

In Concluding on Why Romney Failed

It had nothing to do with reaching out to minority voters in the sense of bringing articulate answers to their problems, it has all to do with the majorities in these groups not liking the applications to conservative principles. It is as simple as that! And with the Supreme Court now possibly being made up of four to five Obama appointees, it looks like the Republicans will have plenty of long years to think about addressing this issue. Perhaps, the best apologetic for their conservative values is getting the experience of living in a socialist country for a couple of decades. Until then, America whether justified or not, will perceive that Romney failed.
