…So what are the reasons for this question? Well whilst you are maintaining your website you make a lot of ‘false’ traffic to your website.
The whole reason you install Google Analytics on your site is to accurately capture data to provide well informed reports etc…that’s when Google Analytics Block IP comes in to play.
You need to determine who accesses your website or blog that you don’t want “counting” on your statistics. For example I have one for my home, one for my office and I outsource various tasks on my blog such as design, social content so I exclude their IP Addresses too.
What Is An IP Address?
A few of you won’t even know what an IP Address is, the best way to think of it is a unique identifier of your broadband or Internet connection.
Your internet service provider or ISP provides you with one (it will be in this format 195.1.2.3 and all the digits can go up to 255) you can pay extra for a static IP this essentially means that it will never change, although even if you don’t pay for this service (It’s not really necessary) your IP Address should not change on a regular basis (Unless you turn your router off and on all day long).

How to check my IP Address…
It’s a really simple process, just Google ‘What’s My IP’ there are hundreds of sites that will tell you (Don’t just read it off the search description as it will be incorrect).
“Take a Note Of Your IP Address”
Google Analytics Block IP is essentially a filter you create within your Google Analytics account which excludes or blocks defined IP Addresses.
Now it’s time to learn how to block an IP in your Google Analytics account…
- Log into your Google Analytics account
- Click the ‘Admin’ button on the top right toolbar
- Choose the ‘Filters’ tab
- Then ‘+ New Filter’
- Then you want to complete the Filter detail as below and click save.
Things to Remember About Google Analytics Block IP …
This is something that most people don’t consider once they have done the Google Analytics Block IP, the filter will ONLY apply to new data coming into that profile…so any historic data or figures you have WILL stay the same!
Another area where this applies is the Real-Time viewer as it inspects the data packet whilst it’s in a raw format and hasn’t passed any of the filtering.
