It was a massive shock for me (and probably the whole country) on Thursday to find out the Oscar Pistorius’ Girlfriend was shot and that he has been arrested for her murder.
Pistorius is to appear in court for the murder of his girlfriend (Reeva Steenkamp) after shooting her in the early hours of Thursday morning. Details are off course still sketchy and as time goes on we will find out more about the shooting and the motives behinds it.
Being a South African myself I truly hope the shooting of Oscar Pistorius’ Grilfriend was just an accident. Oscar was a role model to so many people worldwide and I would be devastated if he just turns out to be one of the bad guys. For now though … I will not make any negative assumptions until the truth comes out.
Reeva Steenkamp – Oscar Pistorius’ Grilfriend
Reeva Steenkamp was on of FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World for 2 years and was a regular spokesperson against issues of rape and abuse against women. She appeared in numerous advertisements (national and international) and was a celebrity contest on Tropika Island of Treasure that was shot in Jamaica.
Looking at her twitter profile on Valentine’s day she was noticeably excited about the day and urged that it should be a day of love for everyone.
Oscar Pistorius the Athlete
Oscar made history at the London Olympics in 2012 when he became the first double amputee athlete to complete on the track at an Olympic Games. He worked for years to reach this goal and when he competed at the Olympics he’s status went from Paralympian to Olympian. Together with his physical challenges this rocketed his status as an athlete and he became an instant superstar.
Oscar was a double amputee before his first birthday and that was all he knew. He did not see himself as challenged, but rather fought with everything he had to be recognised as a phenomenal athlete.
He battled for years to be allowed to compete at the Olympics against able bodied athletes and even though he had some tough times when the outcome of this dream seemed very negative, he pushed through and finally got permission to compete.
He competed for South Africa in the individual 400m and the 4 x 400m relay at the London Olympics and although his times where lacking behind the top performers, he give 150% of himself all the time.
Just because of Oscar Pistorius’ attitude of “never give up” I will not judge him until all facts are known. I will not take part in any gossip or try to sensationalise what happened – purely out of respect of his commitment to his sport. I believe he deserves that.
A life lesson from Oscar Pistorius
As with any dedicated athlete we can all take some lessons from his absolute commitment to his goal. The big question: “Are you as committed to your goal of your own business like Oscar was to his sport?”
If your answer is not YES to that, if you will not do everything possible to reach your business goals, if you will not put in the extra hours or fight the people who say you cannot do it, you might as well give up now.
The only people who come out as winners at the top, are those who will stop at nothing to get there.
Have a great day!
