Emotionally Reach Your Audience Through your Copywriting…
Copywriting is an internet marketing skill that is extremely underestimated. The biggest key to having awesome copy is being able to reach your target audience emotionally, because emotions are the real reason people buy anything. So let me tell you a story that helps relate this…
My good friend Devin had a crazy weekend, especially since his Uncle Vinny passed away. He was talking with me on Friday night, and all of a sudden something I said in conversation triggered an idea. So he excused himself from the conversation, ran to get his lap top, booted it up, and quickly opened up his Facebook page. The next few minutes he was tapping away until finally he shows me this:
Uncle Vinny is the non-red head ginger
This was an extremely emotional status wasn’t it, and it got a lot of responses. What if you could get responses like that on anything you wrote or tried to sell? Wouldn’t that be awesome! It was extremely touching even though I never met the guy. His passion really shows through and it actually makes me tear up when I read it, and that is the power of writing something emotionally influential. So I started to ask him a question:
So what gave you the inspiration to write this?
He was crying a little bit too, as he said
Because you were talking about ketchup and I just remembered how my Uncle Vinny used to put ketchup on his eggs just like I do.
I was looking blankly at him and then I said:
So did talking about ketchup remind you of an experience you had with him?
He starts to nod his head and explain this to me, because when he was a kid he was sitting at the kitchen table on a Sunday with his Uncle Vinny and his parents, and he remembered how his Uncle Vinny had a great big glass of milk and a plate full of eggs drowning with ketchup. As they all sat down to have breakfast they opened Devin’s report card from school, and when it got to Uncle Vinny, a smile lit up on his face as he gave Devin a high five and said emphatically how proud he was…
Talking about ketchup triggered an emotional state of mind that brought him back to when his Uncle Vinny was alive and giving him praise. This was no accident, this was actually a pretty common hypnotic phenomena and it had to do with simple “suggestions”.
The Power of Suggestion
A suggestion is nothing more than an idea that is slipped into the subconscious. However for a suggestion to be powerful usually three things must happen:
- The person must be in a focused state of mind. This means that the person’s attention is wrapped around the idea that you are expressing.
- The person must be open to the idea, and the idea must be something that that person will accept being open to.
- The suggestion will stick more if it is repeated again and again, which will stick in the subconscious longer.
Along with these three things, an important thing to realize is all suggestions have associations. What this means is that when I was talking about Ketchup with Devin, he made an association with his Uncle. There is no logical link (also known as “free associations”) from ketchup to his uncle except that it was based in an experience he had. So an association can be logical or free. If you want to learn more about associations and how powerful they are you have to watch this Video Training that my mentor does, just listen to his suggestions throughout it, and be amazed on how it will influence you emotionally. Totally freakin’ awesome!
The key to choosing the right suggestions lies in your audience that you are trying to reach. Devin did an awesome job with this on his Facebook status when he said:
I remember how we used to both help my dad move his stuff around, and how he would always call my dad “turkey” and my dad would call him an “old lady.”
The terms “turkey” and “old lady” were actually terms that Devin’s dad and Vinny used when they were poking fun at each other. Anyone that knew Vinny or Devin’s dad would know this, therefore it would have a profound effect on their emotional state. Check out the comments:
As you can see those words have really impacted the people that looked at the status, and those suggestions really associated with those particular people in some way or another. Even though this was an extremely hard loss for Devin, I really commended him on writing something so beautiful and emotionally influential. This is exactly how you have to write a piece of copy when you are marketing, because it has to be passionate, and from the heart. the more “real” it is the more it will connect with people that read it.
The right Suggestions will get people to buy…
All suggestions are emotionally charged, almost like a battery. You know when you put the battery in the remote control, you have to match up the positive with the negative, and negative with the positives or else the remote won’t light up. It’s the same thing with suggestions where if you don’t say the suggestions that match and associate with the person that is going to buy your product than how can you sell anything?
- Suggestion+person that can’t relate=No Sale
- Suggestion+Person that can relate=Sale
