Humm, tolerance it a sticky business and having zero tolerance is REALLY sticky! ”One’s enemy is the best teacher” is the best place to start. Is it important to understand your enemy in order to practice tolerance? Absolutely!
Should we have zero tolerance in business?
…sometimes Yes, sometimes No!
which one helps with keeping the peace? Well, Both!
In some business’s, the customer is ‘always right’, so zero tolerance is never allowed in order to keep the peace… you tolerate everything because that person could have a big mouth and spoil future sales to others. You must accept that every person is a potential downer and treat them ALL as we would want to be treated.
In other business’s, certain behavior is ‘just not appropriate’, so zero tolerance is necessary to keeping the peace… For instance, schools. Entering with a weapon is strictly forbidden due to zero tolerance guidelines, as it should be! We need to accept that there are a few bad seeds in every garden and pull them out!
Aha! Now we’re talking! It’s really about keeping the peace and tolerating (or not) what brings about keeping the peace, accepting that there is good and bad in most people and learning to know when to tolerate and when not to…
So, what does this have to do with the practice of tolerance? Just this, you first need to know your enemy and how they are capable of disrupting your peace … and, then, choose the best course of action to attain your ultimate goal, be it future sales, maintaining a learning (and not frightening) environment, or maintaining productivity in your business…
keeping the peace.
For me, the practice of tolerance has given me new insight to others and what motivates us all… the search for peace. The majority of my enemy’s have turned out to be those who have had their peace taken away for some reason and they are lashing out. It’s not for me to take personally (most of the time).
But, in the process of getting to know them… I can begin to understand (and tolerate) them for who they are, beyond the negative emotion. Sometimes, I can relate to a time in my life when my ‘keeping the peace’ was the hardest thing to do because I was so Pissed Off!
Thank God I had people around me who tolerated me (not zero tolerance!) and just held me tight until I was ready to grow out of my rut and move on. I am extremely grateful that I have been blessed with a family (mostly) of people are as interested in keeping the peace as I am!
