How to sell things online

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Many people look to either supplement their income or work for themselves by selling Sell things onlinegoods or services and one of the most convenient, cost effective and sometimes easiest way to do this is to sell things online.

In the modern age this is not too hard to achieve if you can find the right platform to advertise whatever you have to offer and in this article I am going to highlight just a few of the best known Internet sites to advertise a variety of things.

When people talk about “sell things online” the first place many think about is something like eBay and while this is a well know platform to advertise goods there are other options such as Amazon and Play.com, depending on what you want to sell.

eBay is perhaps the best place to start to sell things online, as there are millions of potential buyers and it is possible to sell just about anything on that site (providing whatever you sell has a physical presence).

When I use the term “sell things online” I am not talking strictly about physical items, such things can also include writing articles or blogs, spread sheet or database work on behalf of another person, build websites etc.

Providing you have some ability in one or more computer software applications you will probably have a service you can sell but of course you need to tell the world you are available to sell things online.

There are of course websites that have been created, some of them you can advertise your skills and bid for work for free. Freelancer.com and oDesk.com are considered to be the front runners in this field and are ideal places to start.

On these venues, employers advertise specific jobs or projects that they require to be undertaken. Employees looking to work, place a bid to be considered by the employer and if the skills and experience are suitable the project is awarded.

The third option and the best if you can make it work for you, where you can sell things online is by creating your own website. You will of course need to get traffic to visit your site and if this can be achieved it is by far the best option.

There are many “off the shelf” websites available where you are free to sell things online but the best options will normally cost a monthly fee for hosting the site. eCommerce.com is a great example where the monthly fee contributes to Google search engine optimization and it is possible sell things online from the very first day following the launch of the site.
