Did Jackie Chan Ever Fight Bruce Lee?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

One of my favorite actors is Jackie Chan. Many do compare him to Bruce Lee since they are both famous for Hong Kong and martial arts movies. Many have asked this question did Jackie Chan ever fight Bruce Lee?

So the quick answer to did Jackie Chan ever fight Bruce Lee?

The answer is yes on Enter The Dragon. (Video below)

At the time Jackie Chan was doing mostly stunt work on movies. Jackie Chan was not a well known actor at the time, he was mostly doing stunt work on many different Hong Kong movies. In this scene Jackie Chan is one of the bad guy who get beat up on by Bruce Lee.

However something went terribly astray. Bruce Lee was fighting with sticks and Jackie ran up to fight Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee accidentally hit Jackie in the head with the sticks. Jackie falls over and Bruce Lee completed the scene until the director said, “Cut!”

Then Bruce Lee turns around and runs back to see if Jackie was ok. Jackie said it did not even hurt, but he pretended that it hurt to get more attention from his idol Bruce Lee. He said for the rest of the day, Bruce would salute Jackie and Jackie would pretend that he was still hurt.

Later Bruce Lee asked Jackie Chan his name and what style he was learning (southern style). They talked.

Recently Jackie Chan explains this in a short video on a clip Best Story Ever:

After the tragic death of Bruce Lee, many of the movie companies in Hong Kong was trying to find a replacement. Jackie had moved to Australia to be with his parents at the time and working as a cook. Willie Chan found Jackie and brought him back to Hong Kong to work for Lo Wei Motion Picture Company.

Most of the movies Jackie Chan did was not successful. This was because Jackie Chan admits that his style and Bruce Lee’s style are completely different. At the time Lo Wei was trying to make Jackie Chan into the next Bruce Lee. After some time, Jackie Chan was loaned to another company or a two movie deal.

This is when Jackie Chan had his first successful movie, Snake in The Eagle’s Shadow. The director allowed Jackie to bring his comedic kung-fu into the movie. This and the following movie Drunken Master were successful.

When Jackie returned to Lo Wei’s company he did a few more movies. However, his manager Willie Chan had moved to Golden Harvest and talked Jackie into moving to Golden Harvest. This leads to a Lo Wei using the triads to get Jackie Chan to complete movies for his company. Willie and Jackie did leave Hong Kong and went to South America for a while in hiding until some deal could be worked out with Lo Wei.

With Golden Harvest is where Jackie Chan started making many of his movies he is now known for.

While Jackie Chan Did fight Bruce Lee and lost of course, Sammo Hung claimed he did fight Bruce Lee and beat Bruce Lee in a sparring match. However, there are no witnesses just Sammo Hung and Bruce Lee. So not sure if that is true or not.
