How To Clean A Dog’s Ears The Natural Way Using Essential Oils
Does your dog shake his/her head frequently?
Does your dog cry out when having his ears petted or scratched?
Are the inside of your dog’s ears pink with dark spots?
These issues above are signs that there is a problem. It could be either a yeast (fungal) or bacterial infection in your dog’s ears.
My male German Shepherd named Danny is a rescue dog. I got him when he was 13 months old and he is now 9 ½ years old. I was told that he had allergies and a blood disorder, plus what shots he had received.
I took him to my vet and had her look at him so we would have a baseline on his health. At the time, he had a lot of earwax built up in his ears but no signs of any infection.
……Over the years, the earwax has been a breeding ground for yeast.
He ears should be pink but there are times that his ears look black inside. I have routinely cleaned them with warm water and an ear cleaning solution recommended by my vet.
However………. nothing has gotten rid of the fungal infection.
I have to admit it has taken years to get Danny to the point where he will let me mess with the inside of his ears. He still does not like it but does tolerate it as long as it is done quickly.
I am so totally into the healing power of essential oils.
I read my reference books quite frequently.
I have a reference book on essential oils for natural pet care that I really use.
I found the other day a natural ear cleaning for dogs using essential oils. With one recipe, you wipe the ear out and the other one you spray a fine mist into the ear.
Since essential oils are derived from plants, the infection in the ears doesn’t become resistant to the oils like when you use traditional medicine to treat the infection.
In the past, I have used diluted organic Oregano Oil to clean Danny’s ears.
The Oregano Oil has the properties to stop fungal infections, which it did.
…..Nevertheless, when I stopped using it the fungal infection came back. The Oregano Oil was also not 100% essential oil.
In the recipe to clean the dog’s ears, you do need to use 100% essential oils.
100% essential oils give you the health benefits that you need, and a little goes a long way.
This is the recipe that I have just started using to clean Danny’s ears:
Add the following to 4 cups warm water:
- 1 teaspoon of Thieves Household Cleaner or Animal Scents Shampoo – if when wiping out the ear, the solution is sudsy then dilute your solution more.
- Optional—2-4 tablespoons of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar –Vinegar is naturally antifungal.
- Optional—you can add 2-4 drops of essential oil(s) to the Thieves Household Cleaner or the Animal Scents Shampoo and mix this well BEFORE adding to the 4 cups of water
I don’t know about you, but I am excited to use something that has the healing power besides using modern medicine. After using traditional medicines, the medicine loses its effectiveness and the infection just comes with a vengeance.
