Ingrown Toenails
Today’s topic might not be one that everyone may be interested in but I just came back from the doctors and having one cut down or off. When you get an ingrown toenail they are quite painful especially if you let them go and you end up with an infection like I have.
I realize that with me being a diabetic I should not have waited as long as I did, other circumstances were involved as well. Such as me being on social security and not having any supplemental insurance. I go to the VA clinic or hospital that is closest to me.
Ingrown Toenail What is It ?
Ingrown nails — when the nail grows into the flesh instead of over it — usually affect the toenails, particularly the big toe. People with curved or thick nails are most susceptible, although anyone can suffer from ingrown nails as a result of an injury, poorly fitting shoes, or improper grooming of the feet. People with diabetes, vascular problems, or numbness in the toes need to be aggressive in treating and preventing ingrown toenails because they can lead to serious complications, including the risk of losing a limb.
I copied this information from WebMD so you will have a better understanding of what they are. I am quite certain that I do not need to define what an ingrown nail is. Not everyone will suffer from having one sometime in their life. I wish that I was the one not having to suffer.
The image on the left is what my nail looked like, the one on the right is a bit extreme if you ask me. I was just looking at images on google and all I can say is WOW some of those pictures made me cringe. I know that I would not let myself suffer they way I think the people that had those nails must have.
Ingrown toenails are mostly caused by cutting your toenails to short or rounding the edges, wearing ill-fitting shoes or tight hosiery that will press the nail into your toe.
Ingrown Toenail Treatment:
Avoid trimming the corner of the toenail unless you can easily see and clip the corner of the nail. Otherwise, this can lead to a worsening of the ingrown toenail. If you notice an infection, see your doctor, who may prescribe an antibiotic. In many cases your doctor may recommend partial removal of a severely ingrown nail. If the ingrowing piece of nail is not removed the problem will often persist. Permanent removal of the nail root at the ingrown side may be advised if the ingrown nails recur.
These procedures are done in the doctor’s office or surgery center under a local anesthetic. Once again this information came from WebMD.
In conclusion I just want to say that having an ingrown toenail is definitely not a fun thing to go through.
