It’s stories like these that make me glad I live in America. I don’t care how screwed up we are in America, we have some freedoms that do not exist in other countries. We don’t have to worry about ridiculousness like this happening.
The Daily Mail UK reports this today:
A 15-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by her step-father, has been sentenced by a court in the Maldives to 100 lashes for having pre-marital sex with another man.
Police in the strict Islamic country had been investigating allegations the girl had been abused by her stepfather for years when they uncovered new evidence.
The girl and her step-father were first arrested after the body of a baby she had given birth to was found buried outside their house on Feydhoo in June 2012.

A 15-year-old rape victim in the Maldives is facing a flogging of 100 lashes after being convicted of engaging in pre-marital sex.
The government and groups such as Amnesty International are criticising the court’s decision, which was not directly related to the rape.
Behind the Maldives’ image as a honeymoon paradise of coral islands lies a society whose people are often subjected to harsh laws. Women are overwhelmingly more likely than men to be sentenced to public flogging for fornication, the BBC reports.
The girl in the north of the country was raped last year by her step-father, who was also convicted of murdering the baby born as a result.
But during investigation, the 15-year-old was accused of having pre-marital sex with another man. She is now being sentenced to eight months of house arrest and to 100 lashes.

The Maldives is predominantly a Sunni Islam nation which practises Sharia law alongside common English law. Anyone who dares to break the law is sentenced to lashings or stoning to death. What’s interesting is that Sunni is supposed to be one of the more liberal sects of Islam because it deals with Islam mysticism. The sentence will be carried out once the girl turns 18 and it’s not known whether the man involved will also be facing a premarital sex charge. He probably won’t, given the disgusting treatment of women in Sharia law. The Maldivian president called for the girl to be treated as a victim rather than a perpetrator. Well abolish these stupid laws then! Take back control of your country and kick the extremists out of power! Amnesty International and the United Nations have condemned the charges and called for the government to drop the practice of flogging, calling it “cruel, inhumane and degrading”.
I truly weep for this young lady. Here I am… sitting in the comfort of my home…
