If You Are Looking To Get Free Search Engine Traffic Then Read On ……….

When you start thinking about blogging the most important thing to remember is that your title is the most important part of the blog.  You need something catchy that people will want to know what you are offering, but don’t give it away too early in your post.

There are three important steps to getting your post ranked in the search engines for free traffic

  1. Research
  2. Construction
  3. Backlinks

Research

Go to the Google Keyword Tool –www.googlekeywordtool.com/  – remember to change the country at the top to all countries, then type a couple of words into the search box that is to do with your niche (enter different phrases on different lines) then click ‘Get Keyword Ideas’ and then search.  For example if your niche was a diet programme then you would enter something like – best diet, diet, best way to lose weight dieting – which will look like the image below:  Click to enlarge.

The first column shows the competition, the second column shows the global monthly search and the third column shows the local monthly search.  Search volume is not always a sign of how competitive a phrase is going to be to rank for but it is a good start because the higher search volume terms will be competed for by the people with the big sites and large budgets, whereas the smaller search volume keywords should be easier to beat the competition on.  Sort the data into descending order by search volume by clicking once on the header of that column.

Look down the list until you see phrases with 3 or more words in them.  The longer the phrase the more focused the searcher is on getting the answer for what they are looking for and the less the competition will be and the fewer searches there are.  Click the image to enlarge.

I would start looking around the 1000 mark searches per month (as in the chart above) range and use the global monthly search volume column.  Now you can go down the list and find keywords you can write about but it must also be to do with what you are trying to promote, which is very important.  So if you are offering an ebook or report then there is no point trying to rank ‘diet, best diet tips’ etc.  You might get some conversions but if the people are specifically looking for diet tips then they won’t want an ebook.

Next you need to make a list in a notepad or word document of all the phrases you can retry.  So if you are still struggling to find smaller search volumes then dig deeper.

Once you have your list go and do a bit of spying on Google !!  But before doing that though you must realise that some articles will get to the top easily and others will never see the first page of google or even have any results at all.  By trying different phrases you should eventually find phrases with a low search.

When checking the competition on google you need to check out the competition as follows:

  1. In the title tag – is the keyword in the title?
  2. Does the description have the keyword in it?
  3. Authority sites are the top results which are mostly Wikipedia and About.com (so we leave them alone)
  4. How many backlinks does the site have?

If you take a look at all of this then you will know what you are up against, but on the other hand don’t spend too much time on it as it is better to get those first few blog posts out there and take it from there.
