The 15 Minute Social Workout
Social workout. A strange term?
Social Media Today posted an interesting idea on their site comparing social media marketing with a gym membership.
Here is some of what they had to say:
How can you get rock hard abs and a killer social media presence in just 23 minutes a day? First, purchase an old VHS tape of 8 Minute Abs, then read Social Media Today’s “15 Minute Social Media Workout.” Designed for maximum effectiveness in minimal time, the SMT approach focuses on growth without having to hire an entire flock of social media experts, gurus, or ninjas.
A sampling of the “warm up” to get started:
Identify Your Goals: Anyone who has been successful in maintaining a workout regime will tell you that it all starts with having a measurable, clear goal with a defined timeline. For example, ‘Lose Weight’ is not going to motivate you to stay truthful to your workout schedule as much as ‘Lose 5 pounds in 2 months’ will. Similarly, for your social media efforts to be successful, you must clearly articulate what you plan to achieve from it. It could be an increase in leads, increase in sales, increase in your websites rankings, or even a reduction in customer complaints.
Get Your Membership: Just like enrolling in the right gym or spinning class is important for your workout regime’s success, it is important to identify the social media channels where you want to be present. Since most memberships are free, the best way to do this is to be present in as many relevant channels as possible. This is especially important for a small business which can make use of business leads and back links from as many sources as possible.
Have Your Scales Ready: Once you have enrolled in all social media sites, it is important to measure your performance against your goals. You can use one among the several social media monitoring tools that are available today. Most of them offer free trials which is even better! It’s best to choose one that you find easy to use and gives you the analysis that you require.

Social Workout Ideas

I would like to add some ideas to this list:
• Social Workout Tip #1
Learn your equipment- you wouldn’t hop on a piece of gym equipment without knowing what it does and how it works. Learn the tools you have for social media interaction and use them correctly.
•Social Workout Tip #2
Get some training- no you don’t have to go to every guru out there but find somebody who knows more than you do and model what they do. Hey, isn’t that what we do in an aerobics class?
• Social Workout Tip #3
Have a social workout schedule. How many days a week will you do your social workout? Decide in advance.
• Social Workout Tip #4
Stick to your schedule. Your readers will come to anticipate and look for your posts.
• Social Workout Tip #5
Learn the rules of etiquette and follow them. Learn how to post without spamming. Learn how to market effectively without turning off your readers.
Social Workout Thoughts
Thinking about your social network marketing as a social workout is an intriguing idea. If you think about your gym activities, you can bring a lot of new ideas into your new social workout!
