Take Out the Trash!

Trash night is here. On Wednesday nights in our neighborhood, everyone empties the trash in the house, dumps it into a trash can and takes it out to the foot of the driveway. It’s a dirty, smelling and unpleasant task.

Here’s a question for you. Is there trash in your brain? Is it dirty, smelly and unpleasant?

Take Out the Trash in Your Mind

Zig Ziglar refers to the trash in your mind as “stinkin’ thinkin’” and it is bad news. Mind trash will stink up your life every time.

Thinking trash thoughts creates a cycle of failure that without awareness will ruin your life.

Here’s an example:

I have been watching some Facebook posts by the son of friends of ours. Let’s call him “Bob.” On an almost daily basis, Bob posts his trash complaints about how bad he has it, how God has abandoned him, how nobody likes him and on and on.

So how do you think that’s working for Bob? His friends are sick of his whining, his attitude prevents him from getting a job and thus he has created a cycle of negativity and failure created by his mind trash.

 

Replace the Trash With Positive Thoughts

So how do you take out the trash in your mind? Replace your thoughts with better ones. Try some gratitude. Think about better stuff.

Here’s a quote from the Apostle Paul, a brilliant, educated man, who turned his life around from being a dangerous threat to believers to being one of the most powerful evangelists ever. Here’s what he says in the book of Philippians Chapter 4, verse 8:

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.

Try thinking about things that are

• True

• Noble

Right

• Pure

• Lovely

• Admirable

• Excellent

• Praise worthy

Here are some suggestions for taking out the mind trash:

• Pay attention to your thoughts. Awareness is step one. Are your thoughts positive or are they trash?

• Put a rubber band around your wrist and snap it HARD when you have a trash thought.

• Start a gratitude journal. Every day write down 5 random things for which you are grateful.

• Do something nice for someone.

• Watch what you watch. Stay away from negativity on TV. And… do you really need to hear all of the horror stories on the news?

• Listen to something positive and uplifting while you drive.

• Pay attention to the music you choose. Is it positive or is it mind trash?

• Read something uplifting every day. Some of us choose the Bible, some choose other books that they find uplifting.

Mind trash is a constant battle. Become a mind trash warrior and watch your life turn around!
