The Risk Takers
We all know them. Sometimes labeled from an early age, or even called the “dare devil”. I am talking about the ones we could always count on when we chickened out, the risk takers!
Looking from the outside in, the risk takers have guts and almost no sense of fear. They look at something once, maybe twice and say “Okay, I’ll try it.” While others observe and say “really?”. Surely they have the same genetic makeup as me, for the most part. How is it they’re not trembling at the thought of embarrassing themselves of failing?
The Risk Takers
Who I call the great ones, some of the famous risk takers known globally, share a common theme. Showing courage when there was no safety net, no promise of success, and doing it anyway! I also noticed another pattern in reading some of these stories; there was no plan B.
This summer my church preached from the theme, Superheroes, and focused on different male and female biblical superheroes. At the end of one of the sermons, the pastor said, “You have to get all in and just do it!”. That really sat with me and resonated to my core.
Why don’t we “just do it”? To answer that question, have the conversation with yourself to be honest, no excuses. F.E.A.R (False Evidence Appearing Real) is usually the first stone, hurdle, roadblock, whatever you want to call it. Also disappointing others is a big one that we may not want to acknowledge. Sometimes, we are busy trying to please our parents now, because we think we can make up for some craziness we did in the past.
Or maybe you don’t want to leave the comfort of your circle of influence. Let’s face it, when you start to grow, people who aren’t growing with you will look at you differently. Some for the better, some for the last time. Yet, for some reason you believe your current situation is as good as it gets, your best days are behind you. My friend, that is simply your fear speaking and not reality.
The Risk Takers
Let me clarify, that risk taking is not simply for business ventures. Anything that takes you outside of your comfort zone, leaving you with a knot in your stomach, but up at night, is usually a risk worth taking. As a female, I can’t imagine having to walk across a dance floor and asking a young lady who is probably with her friends, to dance.
As a female, I know that if I did that, my odds are pretty high that I would be successful. One reason is that it doesn’t happen all the time, so the guy would be flattered. If by chance he said no, pretty sure one of his friends would take me up on the offer. Men, the competition never ends.
A kid learning to ride his bike? I don’t mean the kid you initially see with mom or dad holding the seat, but the kid on the sidewalk with the bike mangled on top of him after falling? That kid has guts to get back up and try again, because they have seen in success in this bike riding business and they want in! They may have to go home to clean off some scrapes, but you know they’ll be back at it first chance they get. That my friend is how risk takers develop. Trying again after an unsuccessful event!
