Home Schooling, is it for You?
Living in an urban city, I have heard more conversations about education
since becoming parent, that I am sure can last a lifetime. I grew up in a suburban area where everyone pretty grew up with the same group of kids going to the same public school.
Whomever I knew from elementary school, even if they moved, we’d probably reunite somewhere in middle school or high school. Fortunately, the school district had a great reputation and most kids went to college. It was a very natural progression in high school.
Boy, have I discovered what a difference people have had! Living in an urban city now, of course I see more private schools, independent schools, but also a growing community of those who have chosen home schooling for their family.
Now, I personally always imagined those choosing this path as stay at home moms who wanted to give, or had the option to give more personal attention. Wrong again! According to Kathleen Berchelmann, M.D. this is what she discovered at her first first home schooling parent meeting:
…and so I timidly attended a home school parent meeting last spring. Surprisingly it was full of doctors, lawyers, former public school teachers, and other professionals. These were not the stay-at-home-moms in long skirts that I expected. The face of homeschooling is changing. We are not all religious extremists or farmers, and our kids are not all overachieving academic nerds without social skills.

Although the regulations are different amongst the country, at the time of release, education in the United States is a hot button! Home schooling has quickly become a movement that working adults are considering as a serious alternative. There are many factors influencing these choices:
- failing neighborhood public schools
- bullying
- crowded classrooms (even in some private schools)
- charter school lottery systems
- rising costs of private education
Home Schooling may be a Better Fit
If the idea sounds ideal, but still a bit overwhelmed at where to start, you 
are not alone! If you being your search on the internet, your state’s department of education will be the best place to start. As you saw the graph, every state is different on what it finds relevant to accomplish at each grade level and how to determine its been accomplished!
