How to Write a Blog Post

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

How to write a blog post is basically these steps:

Do your research, and choose a keyword phrase

Craft a great title that includes your keyword phrase

Choose or create images to compliment your topic

Make sure your content has an intro, a main point, and conclusion

Include a strong call-to-action

Add your signature

Link to related posts, on your blog and others

I’ll start by giving you the brief version. Each blog post should have a keyword phrase, good title, image, good content, call-to-action, and signature.

7 Elements of a Great Blog Post

Keyword Phrase

The biggest part of learning how to write a blog is learning to write exactly what your readers want. You find that out through keyword research, and you deliver it through keyword optimization. You can go to Google Keyword Tool to research.

The great thing about the internet is that you can access all the marketing information you want at your fingertips. This means you can write about something that people are actually searching for not just random things that mean nothing. For example ‘how to write a blog post’ is actually a keyword phrase so it gives my blog post more of a chance of getting found.

Choose a topic and then pick a keyword phrase that best suits your topic. Or choose a keyword phrase, and create content around it.

You won’t always find a great keyword phrase to match the topic you want to blog about.
That’s okay. Your readers will appreciate a few off-the-wall posts that are written more for “visitor optimization” than search engine optimization.

Craft a great title that includes your keyword phrase

The title of your blog post is incredibly important.  The post title also becomes the page title (meaning it is used in the Title Tag and shows up in the Title Bar of the browser window). It also becomes the Anchor Text for the hyperlink in the search results – meaning this is what people will see and read when they are deciding which result to click on. Your post title becomes the Anchor Text for all of the inbound links pointing to this post that are created automatically through your blog.

Your title needs to be interesting and engaging. It has a big job – it compels people to click through and start reading. Two things go into a really great title: a keyword phrase, and a little copywriting skill.

If you happen to create a really long title for your blog post, consider editing the permalink. You might use a shorter version of the title that still includes your keyword phrase.

Choose or create images to compliment your topic

Images engage your reader, break up long boring text, illustrate points – and they can also be used to draw the eye in specific directions.

Since my topic is “how to write a blog post” I simply used one I got from Google images, which can be very effective and many to choose from. You can download your images to your computer or other photo software services you may use such as Flickr.

You can also be clever and use an image to bring attention to a certain area within a post.
This is useful when you want to amplify a certain thing within a post.

Flow your content with an intro, a main point, and conclusion

I like to write a general outline of the purpose of the post. Write a short intro and then write the conclusion answering the question. Sometimes in your own industry you just assume that other people know ‘stuff’, but they don’t. Keep it simple and provide your customers with the ‘how to’s and ‘what is’ about your field or industry. Brainstorm a few ideas now – what ‘how to’s’ and ‘what is’ posts could you write about.

Describe in a blog post how one of your products or services can help your customers. Think of your customers when you write a blog post like this and give them all the benefits. Help them see the need in having your product or service. Customers don’t often know what it is they really need. They need our help and expertise to guide them in the reasons why.

Include a strong call-to-action

This is when you ask your readers to do something. So what do you want them to do? Sign up to your list, contact you via phone, buy your product, leave a comment on your blog. Give them one option and make it loud and clear.

Add your signature

Add your own personalized signature to the end of every post. Wish people a great day and sign off in your own style for best results.

Wrap it up with a well-written P.S.

A well written P.S can either add a reminder of the action you want them to take or it can add an addition onto what you have to say. It helps to wrap things up nicely with a bow on top.

Link to related posts, on your blog and others

Linking to other posts within your own blog or website can help direct readers to the next piece of content that may be of interest to them. You can also link to other people’s blogs where they can find valuable resources to help them with what it is they are looking for. Your readers will respect you for this and see you as the person to come to for advice and guidance. This will keep your readers coming back for more.
