How to blog on Purpose

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

When first starting at writing your blog post, the task of creating interesting content can be overwhelming. Many people get stuck at this point in the process because they’re terrified of making the “wrong choice”. Don’t be afraid to dive in and figure it out as you go. We all do that. Better to do that than to do nothing at all. Just go for it!

To blog on purpose is you can get your keyword ranked on the search engines so people will find your blog

  • Think about what that person would search for if they were looking for a site like yours. For example, what are the words or phrases they would type into Google to find your site? Maybe they would enter “easy knitting patterns,” “frugal living,” “stay at home dad” or “blogging tutorials.” Those are keywords.

Blog Writing Tip: Imagine The Person You’re Writing To

To Blog on purpose keep your writing clear and focused, imagine a person in your head that is your ideal reader. Think up an image of them. What color is their hair? Their eyes? What’s their name? What do they do for a living? Are they married? Do they have children? You might even draw a picture and stick ‘em on the wall above your computer

Rock your ninja-ness

Let your personality shine through your blog. If you’re goofy, be goofy. If you’re feisty, be feisty. If you’re contemplative, be contemplative. Your readers will be drawn to what you have to say, but they will also be drawn to who you are. BE YOU.

Even if you think you’re only pretty good, but not a ninja, you’re still a ninja to someone. Find that thing about which you have a decent amount of know-how and go with it. Chances are there are others who will appreciate what you have to say.

What are you already doing in life that you could write about and help others at the same time?

  • Are you a Stay at home parent with tips on keeping the kids focused on school or fun activities
  • Are you retired with tips how to stay active?
  • Are you someone that is passionate about health and fitness?
  • Are you Public Speaker with tips on becoming a great speaker?

  • What are your hobbies?

What is a niche?

Your blog’s general topic is often called a niche. While not required, a niche provides focus and direction, making your blog’s purpose easily understood and defined, not only by you, but by your visitors as well. Some examples of popular niches are making money online, food, decorating, memoirs, homeschooling, fitness or weight loss, parenting, photography, etc.

Here are some other questions to get your creative juices flowing.. In the end, make a list of 3-5 topics you really, really love. Go ahead, dream!

  • What enjoyable activity do you get so involved in that you frequently lose track of time?
  • If you were given one week to spend any way you liked (and all your responsibilities were taken care of), what would you do?
  • What do you do consistently in your free time simply because you enjoy it?
  • What do you purposefully make time for not because you have to but because you want to?
  • If money was not an issue, what activity would you spend time doing more regularly?
  • What do people say you are good at and appreciate about you?
  • What makes you over-the-top excited, angry or emotional?
  • What kinds of books do you read, TV shows do you watch or blogs/websites do you visit?
  • What’s your favorite hobby?
  • What do you talk to your friends about?

Now, let’s think about what your Readers want….

  • They want you to relieve their fears.
  • They want to learn something new
  • They want to reach their goals.
  • Readers love to be entertained

Here’s what’s Funny; when I first started blogging I didn’t see myself as a teacher or marketer.

At least that is what I told myself.

At first it was a struggle….

I would tell myself my subscribers won’t actually read what I’m writing; I was placing a mental block on my creative thinking.

When I started blogging with MY purpose

And that’s when I had the proverbial “AHA!” moment. I finally knew what I was doing was actually WORTH something.”

What I found out more about myself is that I am a person who cares about people. It’s Ok to Pitch yourself (and your company) When you truly care about what you do!

See, I’m interested in a lot of things. I’m interested in saving money, living debt-free, having time freedom, having fun with my family, traveling place of this world and teaching people how to generate income online….

Why am I telling you this story?

I believe when you hear my story, you just might be inspired that you can blog on purpose too!

You see, whenever you’re about to start something new, whether it’s new to blogging, starting an online business, investing in new training, or doing ANYTHING; your first reaction might be coming up with an excuse for why you can’t do what you were inspired to do. Just allow yourself to enjoy the journey…
