“Curiouser and curiouser!” cried Alice. You might find yourself exclaiming the same thing when I share with you my discovery.

Goal Posters or Vision Boards work even if you forget you made them.  Let me explain.  I usually work on an annual goal poster around September for the following year.  September 2010 was no exception.  Here is my 2011 poster.

I did spend a lot of time getting it just the way that I wanted it.  Unfortunately, 2011 was a very difficult year at work where we were going through a merger and at home where we were fighting the effects of Joe’s amyloidosis.  While a copy of my goal poster hung in both my offices, I really did not pay much attention to it.  I never made my 2011 Goal Video (I’ll tell you more about that another time.).

September 2011 brought a momentary respite.  Joe had spent most of August in the hospital.  September was looking good.  He seemed to be on the mend.  At work, the new manager we had acquired through the merger left.  Life seemed grand and full of hope.  I still wasn’t paying attention to my goal poster though, there were so many other things to take care.

The momentary respite ended in October.  I spent the rest of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 just trying to stay on course.  I wasn’t looking to update a goal poster or even think of the future.  I just wanted to keep going, one day at a time, one foot in front of the other.  I did what had to be done.

When I made the leap to full-time online entrepreneur (I know, the company gave me the push, but I’d still like to think of it as my decision.) the first thing I did was to organize my home office moving out the remains of the corporate job.  Just last Monday the boxes from my work office were shipped to me.  I finally sat down and looked at my 2011 goal poster.

To my amazement and in spite of the hardships the year had presented, I had accomplished a significant number of the goals I had set for myself.  The backyard park is still not a reality, although I am working towards that now.  The cash reserves still need to grow.  On the other hand, we remained out of debt.  The basement is finished providing a safe haven for the kids to hang out in.  We added the sitting area to our bedroom which allowed Joe to be comfortable and not feel like he was living in the family room since lying down caused him great discomfort.  We resolved the 3 drivers but only 2 cars situation and further improved that when Jen and Nicky got their license this year.  Joe and I had a week long get-away in Vegas.  All this was accomplished in a year of turmoil and without looking at my goal poster most of the year.

With proof like that of the power of a goal poster, think what the future holds.
