E Is for Expert and it’s Good Enough For Me

Witnessing someone being an expert is a marvel to mere mortals. Have you ever witnessed someone come up on stage grab a guitar and start playing with skill and precision the likes of which you have never seen? Have you ever witnessed a professor teach about a subject so complicated, but seem so comfortable talking about it that it almost felt natural. How about joining a home based business and listening to men and women making incredible income talk about their success and what they did to achieve it. When you’re the one witnessing an expert in action it feels like you are witnessing an achievement that is not possible, not by man that is. These experts feel so far out of touch with the man who walks the everyday, ordinary life, that how could one consider themselves an expert in anything.

The truth of the matter is this, experts are all around us. They are in your workspace, walking among us daily, living on your computer, in your classroom, and reading this blog right now. How can we become an expert is really the question most people ask themselves. However, we must go deeper than how can we become experts. Being an expert is just an ideal, it is an elevated level that we place others upon because we don’t know how to get to where we want to be. Which is where they are.

In being an expert

you must  ask yourself why do you want this so badly? What is it do you hope to gain? More self confidence, status, bragging rights, what is it? Do you wish to be the guru in which all come to for answer, knowledge, and teaching? Maybe you want communities to form around you with  what you provide to the population of those that recognize your expertise. Lets start clearing some misconceptions about being an expert.

1. There are no shortcuts to being an expert.

If you feel that you can become an expert overnight think again. The only reason you can stand in awe of others accomplishments is because those individuals have dedicated themselves to the craft they sought.  Not only did they invest countless hours into what they are now considered experts in but they have countless failures leading up to the process.

In life being an expert is not a place that you find, an end destination but rather a continual journey that you take daily.

2. Follow you passions.

What are you passionate about being an expert in? If you are to become an expert you must figure this out. Your passions drive you constantly and move you forward. Without them you will fail to push past the hardest of days when you are too tired, too weak, too busy to continue. Make a list of the things you find interesting, then narrow it down bit by bit till you find out what you are truly passionate about. If you find that you are not, go out and try new things, experience new things and see what it is that you feel that swell inside you grow from. If you are going to invest the time, you must love what it is that you are doing, without that you will fail.

3. Interview Experts

You found your passion, you know what you want to do, and what you want to finally be looked at as being an expert in. Great. Now find others who are experts in that and interview them. What do I mean by that. Ask them questions, see what it took for them to get to where they are, the time, the effort, the sacrifice. No one person will be the same, but you will notice identifying characteristics that will help you along your journey. You may even avoid pitfalls that befell other experts and learn how they overcame. They say that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. The thing you then ask is who are those people. Focusing on spending time with those you want to be like, or become is important. You will be your own unique person of course, but if you find those characteristics in others that you want in yourself, then fill your life with that. You will see your growth increase tremendously. If you want to become a guitar aficionado then spend time around those who are the best. If you want to become the top dog in a home based business find those who are at the top and gain what you can from them.

Remember that being an expert is a relative term. At all times that you are growing you are becoming more and more of an expert. This means that you can help others below you while still growing. Learn constantly from your own experiences as well as others in whatever form possible. Whether you witness it live, read it from a book, watch videos online, or find yourself in moments, consistently create the requirement to seek out education. With enough focus you can achieve your goals. Remember to start small, focus on the fundamentals and work your way up.

Last but not least, if you fail then you fail. Get back up, continue to work, and achieve what you sought after. The difference between you and the guy up on stage is simple. He failed, probably a lot, and he lived. You need to cast aside your fears of failure and recognize one simple thing. You are going to make mistakes, you are going to fail at times. Thomas Edison said,

I have not failed, I just found 10,000 ways that didn’t work.

We see him as such a recognized figure in human history, and being an expert in so many fields.
