Free Screen Capture Tool

Jing
Jing has turned into my favorite FREE screen capture site!
You can capture
1) A simple screen share
2) A short videoOnce you download JING, you will see a sun in the upper right hand corner of your computer screen. Then from the rays of the sun you will see a ‘+’, a computer, or a tool. You click on the ‘+’ if you want to capture your screen. A big yellow square will show up and you create the top left to the bottom right and then name the picture and save the picture.
Jing is so cool, you can also do some basic photo editing in it by highlighting something or creating arrows or other basic editing, or you can upload it into a more sophisticated software.

SnagIt
SnagIt is an upgrade to Jing and I have used it for years as well. It works SLIGHTLY differently and a little more easily than Jing, but there is a cost associated with SnagIt.
SnagIt works similar to Jing but the thing I like the best about it is that I can use the pictures WITHOUT saving them. SnagIt has it’s own little menu of pictures that I can just click on and copy and the upload into a document. There are also more editing tools available in SnagIt.
I used SnagIt at my office and find it very helpful. We create user manuals and other intense picture-oriented documents with SnagIt. I haven’t found a need to upgrade to SnagIt on my home computer. Jing suits my needs just fine for my home use (including my blogging).

Thanks Leslie, I was looking for some tools to capture the screen. Any idea of how long a movie can Jing make?
Luis,
I think it is around 5 minutes. Works for shorter things, but not for really long things like a training class or something. Great tool though. Check it out and try it – it’s free!
Those are great tools, Leslie! I use Jing literally every day!
I do too, Dr. Steve, but I was surprised at how many people had never heard of it before!
thanks for sharing such great free tools !
You’re welcome! Glad it was helpful!
I absolutely looooove Jing! I use it everyday for all of my social networks. Thanks for sharing this awesome tool!
I’m thrilled, Melinda! So many of us do, I was surprised at the number of people who had never heard of it before!
I have used Jing for a couple of years now. It is a great tool.
My comment to you got lost so I apologize if this is a duplicate. But I’m amazed that you found this years ago, Sandy. You must be an early adopter of great things!
It’s all new to me and I’m about to take a look. Thanks Leslie for these two great tips, your factual fun blog that – a gift for all of us ‘newbies’ who are techy challenged, and your You. Here I go over the Jing and SnagIt. Kajing and Snag.
I REMEMBER being a newbie, Charlotte! I write these for my mother or myself. What did I need to know when I got stated – that everyone just assumed I already knew!
You are going to be such a ROCK STAR!
I use and like both Jing and SnagIt. Great tools!
They are both great, aren’t they Tim. Not many others use Snagit that I’ve met. I used SnagIt first and found Jing later.
I use Jing everyday. It has really helped me take my marketing to the next level.
Jing is AWESOME, isn’t it Stephanie. Most of us who have it use it daily – or several times a day! Thanks for the comment!
This is awesome Leslie! Thanks for sharing I’ve NEVER heard of Jing before. Def checking this bad boy out 😉
I’m glad I shared this then, Brandi. We ALL need to have great free – and sometimes paid – tools in our tool box. This one is stays free – not just an introductory period. One of my top tools – period!
Thanks Brandi!

Isn’t is SO AWESOME, Susanne. I also use both but LOVE that JING is FREE! That’s a great way to get started!
It is SO AWESOME, Susanne! Us Mom’s have to find the best tools. Tools are our toys! Right! Rock on MomStar!
I’ve been using Jing for years and it’s freaking AMAZING!
The other tool I use a lot (but isn’t free) is Screenflow.
Great for tutorials and allows for a little bit of editing too.
But, the free version of Screenflow is Google+ Hangouts 😉
There’s always options!
I think you might have been the one who told me about Jing in the first place, Avram! GREAT Reminder – GOOGLE HANGOUTS is one of the best free tools for screen sharing! That is another awesome tool.
Thanks for EVERYTHING you share with us! You are such a ROCK STAR!
These are great resources Leslie, I use both of them! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome, Alesha! They are great sites. I try to share great sites on a regular basis. Not everyone has heard of the same ones.
