Email Marketing Tips: The Quickest Way to Wreck Your Email List
Everyone has heard to internet marketing mantra “the money is in the list!” . If you have just started your Empower Network blog or are thinking of joining, developing a large list will be top of your list.
Instead of growing a list of potential clients by offering valuable information in return for their email address, many people just try to cram their lists with leads.
Email Marketing Tips
The guys over at Nick’s Traffic Tricks have some great email marketing tips, and think ad swaps are a good strategy for building your list. Sharing information about an associate’s valuable free offer and/or mailing list once or twice a month can be mutually beneficial on both sides. Your list receives value an introduction to someone else who can help them.
But sometimes this can get out of hand when automated adswaps are used with little or no actual content from the list owner. Not only that, some of the subject lines are outrageous and border on unethical.
So, if you’re looking to really annoy your subscribers and get unsubscriptions, spam flags and negative mail, here are some things to avoid:
Email Marketing Tip #1. Subject Lines from Hell
For example, the subject line below has three strikes against it:
Re: your check is waiting
This subject line implies that there is a cheque (not “check” – strike 1) with your name on it waiting when you open this email. This is simply untrue and similar to the Reader’s Digest mailings of yesteryear. You don’t have a cheque for your readers, son don’t say so – strike 2.
The word “Re:” is typically used in email subject lines that are a response to a previous email. This format is usually used to indicate what subject you are replying to. As your reader has not sent you an email, don’t pretend they did.
Other bad subject lines contain personal or private wording to create a false sense of intimacy. Subjects such as “Your order is ready” or “Your requested download” are also misleading and designed with only one thing in mind – to have the email opened.
Email Marketing Tip #2: Poor Body Content
The untruths continue as you get further into the email itself. An email body from hell might look something like this:
Hey [name], maybe you didn’t see this:
That’s right! Your check is waiting for you
right now…
All you have to do is to do this action
and you’ll be amazed at how quickly
and effortlessly you can get these
types of checks everyday….
Hit this link to get insiders access now:
Your reader has been tricked into opening the email with the lie about the cheque, only to hear another lie with the statement about a check waiting right now.
Also avoid false urgency appeals such as “not sure how long we are going to give this for free” etc. If you say an offer is only going to last a certain time, make sure you stick to that timeframe, or your creditability will be out the door!
Email Marketing Tip #3: Hiding the Unsubscribe Link
Don’t hide the ‘unsubscribe’ link way down at the bottom of the page. There is nothing more annoying than having to scroll way down without spotting the unsubscribe link, particularly if you are already cranky about something and want to get off the list quickly.
Email Marketing Tip #4: Using Swipe Files “as-is’
Swipe files are to be used as guides or templates. Make sure you don’t use those carefully crafted email marketing messages without changing them to suit your own voice.
One of the best email marketing tips all is to remember that you are building a huge list of people. If you are constantly using the email techniques outlined above, your list simply won’t respond when they truly have something to offer? What good is a list of 10,000 if they all dislike your methods or quietly ignore anything that you send them.
I hope you find these find email marketing tips useful particularly if you are just starting out with your Empower Network blog.
