Having a Family – The Adoption Turning Point
And finally……
As I said in my first post, Having A Family , I love my children, in fact I adore them.
This has been a cathartic process for me and I hope that as I have chronicled my 9 year journey it is helpful to those who are either considering adoption, struggling with the early stages of adoption or simply want to know what it’s like and where the turning point was for me.
So back to where I left off yesterday:
My Turning Point
The summer was a huge ‘adoption turning point‘ for both the kids and for me (an aside: Charlie never really struggled with any part of the process. He had a better idea of the what to expect and rolled very well. He was also gone all day at work).
We began to bond in real ways that Moms bond with their kids. Now any child of mine HAS to know the Beatles and Motown and by the end of July, we had a car singing repertoire that would make any Mama proud. We spent Saturday’s at Michelle’s, pool, sun and kids playing with each other. A great combination for ”relaxing days.” The kids were relaxed, and I was finally starting to relax. I was getting a routine and the kids and I were really starting to like each other; it was no longer just obligation and need.
The Adoption Turning Point for the Kids
August was going to be a really big family month. Frist, we were going to Santa Barbara for my sister’s birthday – this was their first trip with us and they were hugely excited! Surrounded by family and birthday celebrations, they were the center of attention. My sister’s roommate also had an adopted daughter, an older Korean girl, so the kids felt very normal.
After a weekend in Santa Barbara, we returned home to pack again. Three days later we were leaving for the south of France where we had rented a villa with Charlie’s siblings and French sister-in-law, and of course Oma.
The kids would be going on a plane for the first time! As we finally lifted off from San Francisco airport after an excruciating delay that began after we had boarded, Mikey looked out the window and yelled “we’re flying!!” loud enough so that the entire cabin broke out laughing!
The kids were enveloped in a great big family and again they were the center of attention. Everything was new and exciting for them – well the pictures tell the story.
But the real adoption turning point for the kids was returning home.They were happy and happy to be going home. Mikey was starting kindergarten, Issy was enrolled in an all day pre-school and Charlie and I went back to work; we had our routine.
Somehow, we had become a family.
