Few people now know that naval rings are not a modern invention. It seems that the Aztecs, the Incas or the ancient Egyptian were very found of them. Navel jewelry used to reflect social status, bravery in battle or a sacred link with the divinity. In Egypt, only royalty used naval rings, while in the Americans, body piercings were part of the coming of age ceremonies. In modern times we no longer attach a belief system to body piercing. Until the 80s, the only body piercing the Westerner approved of was that of the ear lobes, and for mere embellishment purposes. Things have changed a lot in recent years.

Naval rings are now part of a fashion statement. Lots of celebrities sport naval jewels, starting with Naomi Campbell (one of the first to wear naval rings on the catwalk), Janet Jackson, Madonna, Christina Aguilera and lots of others. Women wear naval rings because they feel sexier and more confident in their look. According to fashion guidelines a nice belly will have flat muscles and a nice ring to accent it all. And we see this principle put into practice every day…

In fact, naval rings have never sold better… Jewelry shops now have special sections dedicated to naval jewelry, while the online offer is simply overwhelming. Naval rings in all shapes, colors, designs and categories can be purchased for a few dollars or for hundreds of dollars. And since we are talking about jewelry, they allow so much room for customization that people simply love naval rings as presents for birthdays, Christmas or anniversaries. With gemstones, Swarovski crystals or even diamonds, naval rings have the highest popularity of all body jewels.

Naval rings can be fake or authentic. The fake ones don’t require any piercing, as they attach to the skin either with a clip or with glue. They are nice and easy to apply and wear, and they make a perfect option for women who don’t want to go through piercing. Authentic rings on the other hand are more expensive, and they require the presence of a piercing for insertion. Lots of commercial jewels are sold in sets, allowing the wearer to change the jewel occasionally, making color matches possible.

If you go shopping for naval rings, make sure you pay attention to issues such as the material that rings are made of. Surgical steel and titanium are the best to use in fresh piercings. Gold and sterling silver are not good in the wound because of tolerance issues.
