How do I live off grid and make money?
Many of us are looking to not only live Off Grid, but also to make money while living the peaceful (green) lifestyle of our dreams. It is possible? Looking at the answers to a few questions, can set you well on your way.
What does off grid mean? Is it really possible, making money from anywhere? Who are you? Where do you live? What do you love to do? What don’t you want? Will people pay money for what I have to offer?
I’m not talking about bartering chickens for shoes. Although, bartering in itself can be a very interesting topic. Bartering can be money-saving and even fun, but I don’t know of a gas station that will trade my bunch of beets for a tank of gas. So, here we go….
What does off grid mean?
The modern “off-grid” usually means that you have:
- Electricity – solar, or wind or you have access to electricity in some source.
- Running water – a well, or other means of collecting water.
- Communications – cell phone, telephone, smoke signals (whatever works)
- Mobility – you have a way to get around and roads to take you there
- On-line – the ability to access the internet if you choose.
Is It Really Possible — Making Money Anywhere?
There have been astounding developments in alternative energy and wireless communications. It is possible, as never before, for us to have our creature comforts, in a country setting; And, if we choose to, to communicate with people world-wide.
We are no longer working from/at home just to survive — bartering chickens and pigs for medicine and new shoes. We can ..you can .. I can …make money and live a peaceful, country life.
So, saying that it is possible doesn’t make it a reality, right? — Right.
Many eager “city folks” have moved to the country and then ended up, after just a couple of years, moving back to the city.
They thought country living was “a piece of cake” .. a romantic notion from the movies, I expect. In the movies, no one is ever thawing water pipes in the winter, or dealing with septic system problems. These are not everyday occurrences, but once they have dealt with one or two ugly repair issues, — folks know if country living is for them.
Okay, so you are one of the people willing to trade a little DIY inconvenience for peace and quiet. You have no interest in “rush hour traffic” or “working for the man”
Do you want to Work from Home or Work For Yourself?
These two are not always the same thing. Look at all the options out there, there are many organizations who would be happy to have you on-board.
Becoming a distributor of “xyz” product? Will success require you to find customers; make phone calls; show your product at markets and trade-shows; deliver the product; have a minimum order; perhaps even host home parties?
Even a “coupon clipping” program may require you to drive all over ‘hell’s half acre’ if you want to make any money doing it.
There are good, legitimate opportunities to earn money, no matter where you are?The old adage: Look Before You Leap — is so true (I have done my share of leaping, let me tell you).
So, doing your research and being clear about Who You Are and What You Want is the first step to finding the perfect opportunity, the one that will not feel like work at all.
If you love to garden, wouldn’t you love to garden all summer and share what you know… and have people gladly pay you for that.
