Can Allergies Cause Weight Gain?
Did you know the over the counter allergy medication you are taking might be putting extra inches on your waistline?
Many people suffer from seasonal allergies during this time of year. For most people if they can’t find a natural relief that works, they purchase over the counter allergy relief products. For some people this could be a problem and could cause some people to gain weight.
Can Allergies Cause Weight Gain?
Researchers suggest allergies and weight gain go hand in hand due to the fact that you may be taking several over the counter drugs.
Researchers from Yale University published a study in the Journal of Obesity stated that people who took antihistamines on a regular basis were heavier than people who didn’t take antihistamines at all.
The two drugs most common in the study were Cetirizine, now called Zyrtec and Fexofenadine now sold as Allegra.
This study was just an observational one and couldn’t really demonstrate whether the antihistamines actually caused people to gain weight or if being obese just predispose people to seasonal allergies.
Can Allergies Cause Weight Gain: Inflammation
Inflammation may play a big role in weight gain. Fat cells release cytokines. What are cytokines you ask?? They are chemicals that promote inflammation. Plus an allergic reaction to a seasonal allergy or even a specific type of food such as gluten can trigger inflammation as well.
Antihistamines may be a big role also. Animal studies have shown that dosing mice with antihistamines increases their appetite.
So, if your taking antihistamine medication and finding your appetite increased then your probably eating more which in turn means you may be packing on the pounds. If you must take antihistamines and your finding your self hungry all the time then I recommend you stick to a healthy diet and be aware of the types of foods you are eating. Eat more fruits and vegetables if possible.
