This was just too good not to share with you. A friend of mine posted this on Facebook and I just found it to be a good read, funny, and insight full. Check it out, click on the image to see a large version of all Pixar’s 22 rules of storytelling. No matter what you are doing, storytelling has many benefits. It can help you build relationships, help someone through a situation, sell something, entertain, and so much more.
Five of my favorite Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling are:
#3 trying for theme is important, however you won’t see what the story is about until you’re at the end of the story, Got it? Now rewrite. – I can totally hear like a producer telling this to the writers, can’t you?
#7 Come up with your ending before you figure out your middle. Seriously. Endings are hard. Get yours working up front. – I think i just heard my mentor say this to me jokingly.. haha funny.. hmm maybe not so much.. Truth!
#8 Finish your story. let go even if it’s not perfect. In an ideal world you have both, but move on. Do better next time. – Oh I think I hear truth again! Too often we try to make things so perfect before finishing. Just finish, learn from it, and do it better next time around.
#17 No work is ever wasted. And if it’s not working, let go and move on – if it’s useful it’ll show up again. – This is kinda funny because I’ve heard this before for writing, but I’ve also heard this before for IT stuff. I heard this before from one of my mentors while we were planning an upgrade of sorts. Sure enough the thing that wasn’t working came up again, and we got it resolved.
#22 Putting it on paper only allows you to start fixing it. If a perfect idea stays in your head, you’ll never share it with anyone. – TRUTH! wow very insight ful, I think #22 is my favorite out of all of them. If all you do is keep thinking about it and don’t take any action towards do it, sharing it, getting it out there. Then what good is it?
