Science of Productivity

First understand that your Will Power alone isn’t enough. Some studies show that will power is an exhaustible source that can be entirely used up. When this happens it’s referred to as Ego Depletion. So don’t convince yourself to try harder, instead use a more methodical approach.

Steps for Productivity

  1. Get Started – Studies show that starting a project can be the biggest barrier to “Productivity”. Before starting our brain visualizes the hardest parts to come and instead tries to simulate real work by focusing on small mindless task. Fortunately there is this effect which compels humans to finish a task that they’ve already started known as the Zeigarnik Effect. Shows that when we don’t finish a task we experience discomfort and intrusive thoughts about it. So Get Started Now!!
  2. productivity (1)Time Management – Sure we hear the saying “Practice Makes Perfect” often right? There are several ways to practice, the best being a more deliberate practice. Deliberate practice is when you focus your energy in packets for the hardest task. Don’t practice ALL day, instead break down the work into periods/segments. Not relying on will power but more so on habits and disciplined scheduling. An example would be setting aside 90 mins of your day to work on task taking 15-20 mins for a break.
  3. Deadlines – This is a key component that will help with time management. Write it down and mark it in your calendar and you’ll be more likely to complete your task. Another method to use is an Accountability Chart. This is a chart to document your progress. In one column right down time span and in other column right down activities accomplished during the time span. productivityWriting down your progress allow you to realistically evaluate your work as opposed to inaccurately assuming what you’ve accomplished. Tracking your progress helps you avoid small mindless work.
  4. Stop Multitasking – True, it may seem like your accomplishing more. But studies show that they are much less productive. Good tip is to make a list at night of what you want to accomplish tomorrow. This way you hit the ground running with your action plan and avoid trying to complete multiple activities at once. Splitting up larger task into smaller bite size task, your brain will find these less daunting and will make starting process easier.

Productivity Conclusion

With a Clear Outcome, Goal, and action plan in mind, your Productivity levels can and will soar to new heights.
