Super Mario Brothers Theme Song

Ok. so it seems I went a little crazy watching videos today. Specifically videos of the Super Mario Brothers theme song being performed through different mediums. Now I’ve never been what you might call a “gamer”. In fact I haven’t owned a video game console since the original 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. But if you’re like me there’s a good portion of your life that revolved around that little gray box. There was something special about it. No matter how many times we had to blow in the game cartridge, or position it just so… when you hit the power button and that screen lit up you were transfered to another world. I even remember waking up early in the morning so I could get a quick game or 2 in before the school bus showed up. And let me tell you, I was NOT a morning person.

Now the game system that I had came bundled with two games. Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt. I spent most of my time with the brothers Mario.

I don’t know about you but, to this day, whenever I hear the Super Mario Brothers theme music I can’t help but envision those tiny mustachioed plumbers bouncing around killing Goombas and collecting coins. And when I do, I’ll admit, it makes me smile.

Now being a musician, I’m a fan of nearly all types of musical expression. So when I stumbled across this first video of someone playing the Super Mario Brothers theme song on the violin, WHILE the game was being played I was intrigued. And I’ve gotta say… impressed. Plus you gotta give him a solid 10 for style points.

This next one is the theme song again played on violin but you’ve gotta give it up for his commitment to the bit. I wonder if the head is heavy?

Now this next one is impressive. Two guys playing the theme song together on a Marimba. If you’re not sure what a Marimba is it’s like a giant Xylophone. If you’re not sure what a Xylophone is you should revisit elementary school music class.

You gotta give it up for a guy that can play it on the piano… BLINDFOLDED. (This one’s kind of long. He really gets into it around 8 minutes in.)

And lastly… something that would not have been possible to do in your bedroom when Super Mario Brothers was new… a 6 part A capella version with all 6 parts sung by the same person. Not bad.
