Sight Word Games

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

I love to read. I am kind of, yes, I’ll admit it, a word snob. I think vocabulary is probably one of the MOST important things in life.

So when we were at Parent’s Night this week, and Hanna’s teacher told me they were using a different sight word list (than I had been using last year lol) I had to go do a little digging to find this new list and see what it was all about.

We’re now using the Fry Sight Word List… and apparently there’s a LOT of words on it. 1000 to be exact ~ but don’t worry ~ kids aren’t expected to know them all until the 5th grade.

The first hundred though… that’s first grade baby. That’s where we’re at.

I happen to think more learning happens when there is fun involved, so I went on the hunt to find some fun sight word games to help my kiddo learn these 100 words. (and hopefully the 100 for second grade as well ~ I’m a word snob I told you!)

Here’s some fun sight word games I found…

Online digital sight word flashcards. This site is really cool. Hanna is good on the computer so she’s gonna love it. You just go to the site, click a list and  then click start. A word pops up on the screen. If your kiddo can read it, you, or they, can the yes box. If they can’t you click the no and it goes to the next word.

This game will track your results for each list, and you can even print them out. Have a fun contest ~ see if your kiddo can do better the next time around.

Sight Word Word Searches ~ I love a good words search, and I’ve been pretty excited about how good my kiddo is at them too. We usually do them on the kid’s menu when we’re out to eat… but what a great way to start learning and recognizing sight words as well!

Sight Word Flash Cards ~ There’s always flash cards… but they aren’t much fun. We end up printing out 2 sets of flash cards and playing “Sight Word Memory” with them… that’s much more fun!

Sight Word Pairs ~ which is kind of like “Go Fish” but you’re looking for words instead of cards. That link will have all the details and everything you need to create your own game.

Sight Word Bingo ~ Bingo’s always a favorite… it’s not just for letters though… now it’s for sight words as well. You can find everything you need to play Sight word bingo .

Sight Word Board Game ~ you can make your own board game with sight words. Create cards, and a game board… have kids roll a dice and move forward on the board reading words as they go. If you not the super creative type you can grab this sight word board game and just start playing.

So there you have it… tons of fun with sight words. If you’re just looking for the basic Fry Sight word list you can find them all .

Have fun with you kiddos, and learning those words.

If you’ve ever wished you had more time at home to play sight word games and help your kiddo learn their sight words, and still make plenty of money, let me share my secret. Just watch that video over there in the sidebar. It’s super simple… and tons of fun.
