Make People Smile… and Build a Wildly Successful Business

There are people who, when I see them on the caller ID, I just don’t want to pick up the phone. I do… but I get a little sinking feeling in my gut.

When I really think about it, it’s because they are always negative, nothing goes right in their life, and they just call to complain, or they always need something. Every time they call it’s because they need a favor, or information, or help with something.

Those kind of people are just exhausting to me. 

Funny thing is… I see people just like them on social media all the time… and I’m pretty sure other people react the same way to them as I do the people who call me.

Here’s the thing…

Social media is just that… social. If all you’re ever doing on twitter is asking for people to go look at your posts… it gets old. People are on twitter because they want to connect, and have a conversation. It’s much easier on twitter to not pay attention than it is for me to not pick up the phone.

If all you’re doing on Facebook is complaining, and talking about how awful things are for you, it gets old too.

Social media is just that social… people want to be around people who are connecting, and having conversations, and are uplifting, and positive, and make you feel good to be around.

If you’re not… it’s super easy to “ignore” you on social media. One click gets an “unfollow” on twitter… and I never have to see your messages again. One click gets a “hide” on facebook and I never see your messages.

It is really simple for people to make you out of sight and out of mind on social media.

But it is JUST as easy to make people look forward to your posts… and to smile when they see your avatar come up. I know there are certain people where that happens for me.

Think about it… you’re on Facebook, and someone’s little face pops up… how do you feel? Are you excited to see what they have to say? Are you feeling a little happier now that you’ve seen their face pop up in your stream?

Take it one step further… when the person who makes you smile talks about something new they have to offer do you ALWAYS look at it, and want to do it?! I know I do! It may not always fit, and I may not join, but I always WANT to… and I always look.

Next think about what that person talks about… what do they do to make you feel the way you feel about them?

For the person who makes you smile, what do they post, talk about, share, be?

For the person that makes you cringe, what do they post, talk about, who are they as a person?

You can learn a lot from your own reactions to your facebook and twitter streams…

Start being the person who makes YOU smile, and suddenly you’ll be making other people smile when they see YOU pop up too!

I have built entire businesses on social media… and it’s all because I work very hard at being the person that makes you smile when you see me in your stream. Which means I work very hard at being that person in real life… because whoever you are is simply amplified on social media.

When people smile when they see you they want to be around you more and more. People want to feel good! When people want to be around you more, they’re likely to join you in whatever you’re doing. If it makes great money, is easy and fun… all the better.
