They say bloggers are supposed to be transparent…..share their stories, their lives and insight in order to be authentic. That enables the blogger to connect to their audience better and not come off like a robot chained to a computer.
No personality. I get it. So….let me get my storytelling on and tell you about the day God told me to shut the $%#! up. No, really. Check this out….
It’s like 1998. I’m 21 and wet behind the ears. Dripping wet. I’d went away to college to North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
However, I’d recently gotten word that my then girlfriend (now gorgeous wife) was pregnant with our first son, Jalen. So I moved back home to Gary, Indiana to be close to them.
I’d transferred to a local college, Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Indiana. I was going to school full time, working a shitty job and living in my grandmother’s basement.
Hey….what the hell are you laughing at? It was kinda like my own house, give me a break.
So anyway…it’s a Saturday…I remember it like it was yesterday.
My girlfriend was over to the house and I was in full whine mode. I was complaining about how things weren’t going well, I had no sense of direction, I didn’t like my major and most importantly…..
I was complaining about how funny my money was. I mean…my money was funny…Kevin Hart funny.
My job didn’t pay much, I’d already received my student loan refund check (and spent it), and had no other answers in sight. So, I’m on a full fledged rant….
My girlfriend was sitting there, being as supportive as possible trying to talk me down off the ledge. Out the corner of my eye, I see my grandmother start walking to the front door…..
This is where it gets good.
I’m still whining..whine…whine…whine. Evidently, my grandmother went to the front door to check the mail because……
In the middle of one of my whines, she emerges into the room my girl and I were sitting in. She hands me an envelope…..from my college.
What the hell is this? It better not be a damn bill……
I open the envelope and it’s a . As my pupils focused in on the dollar amount and my mouth drops, I hear clearly in my ear….
Now shut the f$%! up! I told you. I got you. Always have. Always will. Trust me.
I know everybody has their own conversations with God. I get that. Your God might not curse at you. Mine obviously does because I know what I heard. And it was clearly was a curse word.
And I deserved it.
To this day, I do not know why I received that check. I was not owed any money. Believe me, I’d checked. Nobody ever came after me for the money back. Ever.
I don’t know WHY I got that money but I do know WHO it came from. I learned a valuable lesson that day.
Believing in God is one thing. Trusting in Him is another.
God has blessed me so much in my life. And after that day….I decided to never doubt him again.
