Harriet Tubman Gets A Well Deserved Salute From Google
Yesterday I logged on to my computer as usual. I needed to do some quick research so I went to type in a search string into Google.
But before I could I was met with a pleasant surprise.
This photo saluting legendary freedom fighter Harriet Tubman….
If you don’t know who she was or just not familiar of the achievements of her life, check this out first.
Ms. Tubman holds a special place of inspiration in my heart. There’s a sense of kindred spirit-ness while reading her story.
Harriet Tubman abhorred slavery. She knew it wasn’t natural. Humane.
So she vowed to reach the land of freedom. It was her vision. Her mission.
To be free.
I can relate to that feeling.
I cannot, by any means, relate to the inhumane conditions she and other slaves were forced to tolerate on slave plantations.
But I can relate to feeling enslaved. Beating my alarm clock because I didn’t want to go to this job that I hated.
Being upset because I was turned down for a request for vacation days to attend an event that was important to me.
Being told when to come and when to go. When to eat. How to dress.
Being told how much I was worth when receiving my paltry paycheck.
Feeling like I needed the job and couldn’t escape.
It didn’t feel natural to me. Maybe it does to others, that’s fine.
But it never felt natural to ME. And I’m sure that’s how Harriet Tubman felt.
She knew she had to escape to freedom. So she set out on her journey. And she made it.
But that isn’t even the best thing about her story….
She informed a few people that she was planning to escape. She wanted them to come. But they didn’t. Some were afraid of being caught. Some were more afraid of the unknown than the known evil they were living with every day.
And some even preferred to stay slaves.
So after she set out on her journey and made it, something still didn’t feel right. She could’ve celebrated. Enjoyed freedom and lived happily ever after.
But motivated by her desire to help others, Harriet Tubman made it her mission to return into the grips of slavery to help others escape to freedom.
That displays a certain level of selflessness that I can only aspire to.
So I view myself as a modern day, male version of Harriet Tubman. Not only am I on my own personal journey to freedom, but I am committed to helping as many others possible reach the same land of freedom.
Harriet Tubman used the Underground Railroad as her vehicle to get to freedom. I’ve joined my own version of the Underground Railroad to proceed in my mission.
I’ve joined the largest freedom seeking, freedom fighting community in the world.
We’re freedom-preneurs who are using an amazing system built around blogs just like the one you’re visiting right now.
And the system just costs me , a small price for freedom.
