How to Find Passion & Purpose

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Do you know what your purpose in life is? Do you know what you’re passionate about? We always hear people say “Do what you love”, and “Follow your passions”, but what happens when we don’t know what we love or what we are passionate about?

This question has been on my mind for a few days after a recent conversation with a friend. She told me she was feeling lost and confused. She wanted to move forward in her career and do something that would make a difference. When I asked her how or in what area she wanted to make a difference, she did not know.

This is a conversation I have come across many times, including with myself. At many points in our lives we are left questioning what we are currently doing – and asking ourselves “Is this what I really want to do?” If we don’t know, we ask ourselves “What is it that I really want to do?”

Some people know from early on what they want to be, do, or accomplish in their lives. I believe it is a rare gift to know your calling from early on. More often than not, we change our minds frequently. Later find ourselves getting caught up in the rat race of the “job world” where what we want to do fades to the background and we are left trying to get any general job in our respective fields. Usually it is not until later in life and countless years of “climbing up the ladder” where we really fall into work that we feel good about.

As a recent University Graduate I know this dillemma all to well. I graduated with a pretty general Business Commerce degree and didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do upon graduation. Amongst me were many of my classmates who also didn’t have a very specific idea of what they wanted to do upon graduation.

HOW TO FIND YOUR PASSION:

Watch the following Interview with Author Simon Sinek on how to find your passion.

How to Identify Your Passion & Create Results From It

In this video Simon Sinek explains that passion is an energy. Passion results from doing something that you love to do. It can be a hobby you have that inspires you to think outside of the box and bring creativity to other aspects of your life.

What to Do Next:

1) Following the advice in the above video, I’d suggest you start getting out on weekends and evenings and start exploring!

Go to a concert or a show, visit an art gallery, start learning a language, attend a yoga class, go rock climbing, do a guided meditation, visit the opera or ballet, take a dance class, take a cooking class, take a trip somewhere, join a sports team, read a book, go for a hike, volunteer with an organisation you think is making an impact, etc.

Some of it won’t stick but there will no doubt be things that will!

2) The second thing I’d do is answer these questions:

  • What are you good at?
  • What are you good at that you enjoy doing?

At work do you like to organise things? Do you like making presentations or speaking in front of people? Do you like writing? Do you like research? Do you like being creative? Do you like being active? Do you like eating? Are you good at making people laugh? Are you good at motivating people? Are you good at teaching?

Start looking at what you’re good at and enjoy doing. Start incorporating as much of it as you can into your daily life.

(As Nike Says…) JUST DO IT!

The biggest thing to note here is that if you want to do something, you must take action. Some of you will read this and never actually apply these suggestions. Reality Check: No one is going to get you off your bum and force you to do something. Only you can help you. Only you can motivate yourself. Only you can take responsibility for how your life will go.
