Finding Your Edge: what can you do that others can’t?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Have you ever had the thought that you’re not good enough? Or that other people deserve more?

I’m going to guess that the answer is YES.

I’ve been all through that myself – and to be honest, I’ll bet you that I’m going to have those feelings again sometime in the future.

What I do know for sure is that you have unique knowledge and capabilities that no one else has. You’ve done stuff and experienced stuff that I haven’t.

Whether that stuff was good or bad isn’t what counts. That’s the stuff that gives you AN EDGE.

Here’s why…

Not Using Your Edge

So let’s say you find yourself in need of earning more money. That’s most of us, right? Let’s say you’re out of a job.

Well, anybody can get a job at Walmart. Pretty much anybody. If you can put fog on a mirror, you’re qualified.

Which means you won’t get paid much, right?

So How Do You Use Your Edge?

Ask yourself this:

What do you know that most other people don’t know?

Who do you know that most other people don’t know?

What can you do that most other people can’t do?

It might be something really stupid – like creating the world’s biggest bubble gum bubble.

So that’s probably not a big paying gig right there.

But let’s look at that –

If that’s your talent, you can’t go too far on that – UNLESS you teach other people how to blow bubbles as big or bigger than you.

That’s a start…

What if you entertain people in the process, do YouTube videos, and attract people to your bubble gum blowing contest video challenge, then you’ll get lots of online friends and possibly become famous in the process?

Now we’re talking…

Then you turn it into a business with t-shirts and lessons and bubble blowing  challenge events all around the country sponsored by big companies.

Sure – it may seem preposterous. But that’s the kind of thing I’m talking about.

Meet Jim Stovall

There’s a guy named Jim Stovall who wrote a book called the Millionaire Map. He’s blind – so he’s dealing with an issue that probably makes life more difficult than what you or I deal with.

He says he gets a LOT of money to speak to audiences about overcoming challenges and being successful. In fact, his hourly rate to speak at big conventions and auditoriums is pretty darn high.

But if he spent his time helping people to their seats, operating the lights, or taking tickets, his hourly rate at the very same event would be a LOT less. In fact, he says, he’d probably get fired, because he can’t do those things the same way a seeing person can.

So what if you stopped relying on simply copying others and doing what they do– because they’re already doing it.

What if you didn’t just copy – but learned – and then imitated what others do?

….But then made it your own and did it your way using your own unique style, talent and energy?

Who would have thought a blind guy could bring in that kind of money and attention?

If he can do that, couldn’t you?
