How to Create a Facebook Group

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

I was watching a video on “social syndication” recently, and one of the presenters mentioned the idea of how to create a Facebook group.  Apparently he had created a Facebook group to start building his own “tribe” of people who answered questions for each other, supported each other and gave advice and tips.  After a couple of years now, he has over 2,500 people in his group, and he even found someone to serve as the group moderator so he didn’t have to do that part.

I thought this was a great idea, so I went looking for some simple instructions on how to create a Facebook group.  I am a visual learner, so I went straight to YouTube.com and used it as a mini-search engine (you might find it interesting that a lot of people use that same approach).

Anyways, here’s a simple video I found that explained how to create a Facebook Group.  It also includes some other Group Management features I found useful.

How to Create a Facebook Group

Facebook Group Vs. Fan Page

I’ve always known there are two types of public gathering areas you can create on Facebook.  One is a “group”.  The other is a “Fan Page”.  You might be interested in knowing the difference between the two.

The easiest way to remember the difference is that you JOIN a Group, and you LIKE a Fan Page.

Why is this difference important?  With a group, you can restrict membership.  The lure of this approach is the idea of being in the “inner circle” with “special access”.  People have to be invited to join and then approved for access.  You might think this is silly, but I’ve joined a few Facebook Groups recently and I’m always excited when I get the email that says “you have been approved to join the group”.

As for a Fan Page, anyone can see a Fan Page and simply click the “Like” button.  Fan Pages are meant to be “official destination pages” for people, groups, companies or any other entities.

I followed the instructions on how to create a Facebook group and created my first group!  It is called “David Caban’s Marketing Mastermind“.  Right now it doesn’t have much content (because I just created it), but you’re welcome to join and we can start some discussions!
