How many hundred of text messages do the receive and send during a normal week. As a parent it has always been important to me to know what and who my kids are associating with.
At first it was AIM (instant messanger) now then the flip phone text messages and and now the smart phones. The kids are quicker and smarter than most of us with the texting. My son had friend that could text on a flip phone (the 123 keypad) while never looking at the keypad during class time.

I know one can get pretty creative on the lingo and I use text messaging on a regular basis too. However, I tend to use the traditional spelling and even punctuation occasionally. One of the fears I have is that our youth grow up not knowing how to write and will interject slang / acronyms when it is not appropriate. Or worse yet how to communicate face to face, real conversation, facial expression and knowing someone understands what you mean.

The teens think we are generally idiots and we don’t have a clue … they are about right. We need to have a good idea about what is being said and to whom. I have always insisted that the computers and phones in my home are mine and at any time I think is necessary I can take over the screen and check out anything and everything that is happening in my home on my technology. I also insist on making the purchase and allow my children the privilege of using them. Its called being a parent!

My kids appreciate our relationship more today as they are becoming adults, and parents. They understand it better today and as they get older and it brings a little different relationship in our household. We can be friends now and parents when the need us for advice.
