St. Patrick’s Day

March 17th is an annual celebration throughout the United States and elsewhere.  The celebration is in the spirit of a patron saint of Ireland, St Patrick.  The holiday was made official by the Catholic Church back in the 17th century.

Green is the official color of the day, and most have no idea of the purpose or meaning of the day other than to wear green and to get drunk drinking Irish brews.  In the United States, its basically a reason for people to celebrate and get drunk

What is the true meaning of St Patricks Day?

My understanding of the true meaning of St. Patrick’s Day is the beginning of Christianity in Ireland.  I believe St. Patrick gets credit for the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.

Ironically, St Patrick was from the United Kingdom, not Ireland.  I’ve heard some stories about how he somehow rid Ireland of all snakes.  I don’t know if this is even a literal story, but I’m certain it is not true and not relevant to the holiday.

According to Wikipedia, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in these countries:

Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world; especially in Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.
