How To Take Care Of A Cat

Cats are delightful! They’re smart, but also independent, which makes them a great pet. Taking care of a cat can be a challenge, however. Continue reading to learn more about taking great care of your cat.

If you plan on getting a cat for a pet, try looking into a local shelter. Shelters have tons of great cats and their adoption fee will generally cover necessary vet care. When you adopt a cat from a shelter, you save a life and help keep the cat population under control.

Have your cat see a vet frequently to keep good health. They need a routine check-up every year, maybe more of important shots are necessary. If a condition, illness, or injury happens, your cat should be taken to the vet immediately.

Some cats like to scratch up floors and furniture. If you have a cat that is wreaking havoc, buy a scratching post. Put cat nip on it to attract them to it. It doesn’t happen overnight but with some patience, you should be able to save your house from the claws.

Avoid letting your cat get bored. Cats need stimulation. A lot of cat owners do not keep their cats busy. Bored cats can really be a problem. They can have health issues, OCD, and even depression. Give them enough space to exercise in, with fun toys to keep them entertained. If they’re an indoor cat, get them an object to climb on or a scratching post.

Your cat needs to be shown lots of love. Cats are by nature companion animals, but that companionship goes two ways. Like humans, cats want to feel wanted and needed. Make her feel like she is part of your family.

Feeding your male cat the proper food can help prevent crystals from forming in his urine. These crystals can cause your cat pain to pass, and your vet bill can be expensive. Choose a cat food with low magnesium content. Consult the ingredient list. You will notice that fish-based foods and products are higher in levels of magnesium than anything sourced from poultry.

When your cat is riding with you in your car, ensure you keep their ears in mind. You may think it’s a good idea to listen to loud music on your stereo, but cats generally don’t enjoy this. Therefore, keep your music or other sounds at an acceptable level.

Set boundaries for your children when it comes to having a cat as a pet. Make sure the children know where the cat is and is not allowed to roam. They should know that indoor cats can’t go outside. If you make the rules ahead of time, you can be sure your kids understand them.

Think hard before allowing your cat outside. Your cat might not be safe outside. Your cat could get fleas or even worse parasites. They can get in a fight or be hit by a car. If you still insist your cat be able to go outside, then do so in the fenced backyard.

Cats enjoy heights. A happy cat is one that has a safe living environment. You can give your cat on a shelf to accomplish this. To make it really special, put a bed or blanket up there too.

Don’t try and teach your kitty how the litter box is supposed to be used. They will do it on their own and don’t need to be taught. While some folks think you should pick up your cat and place their paws against the litter, this can actually be traumatic.

Give your cat canned food. Although dry food is usually less expensive, canned food is better for your cat. Canned food will give your cat more water, fat and protein. This will make it easier for your older cats to digest. Speak with your veterinarian before making any major changes, however in general, canned food is better for your cat.

Cat Sheds

Is there cat hair all over every surface in your home? When a cat sheds a lot, brushing is very important. If your cat sheds often, you will need to brush him just as much. This also prevents matting and tangling.

The best way to make sure that you have a healthy cat is to keep up to date with vaccinations and trips to the vet. Kids need shots, and so do cats. You have made your cat a family member, and you have to treat your cat accordingly.

Put a breakaway collar on a cat with an engraved tag. You may have an indoor pet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever get out. It that is the case, you should make certain they have the ability to get back home.

Some food you eat isn’t good to feed your cat. Common foods that are poisonous to cats include: garlic, grapes, onions and tomatoes. These foods are healthy for humans, but they can make cats very sick. Milk upsets a cat’s stomach, too.

Cats are truly the center of the household. Take the time to absorb the insights you have learned here. Once you use the things you’ve learned you’ll have a feline friend that is happy and has a great life.
