How to Benefit From Varying Your Anchor Texts

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

If you want to rank your site, one of the things you need to do is vary your anchor texts.

What do anchor texts do?

Anchor texts play an important role in online marketing because these help bring visitors to a website. These are most commonly used in article marketing. These are the hyperlinked words (or phrases) that are typically found at the closing paragraph of articles. These are the links readers click to be transported to a specific website.

Online marketers need to know how to use anchor texts well because the strategy behind their use will often determine how a certain web page fares in the search engines.

Search engines include anchor texts in identifying sites that they penalize

Search engines, especially Google, are very powerful because they can control how your website performs.

Google is very powerful. This is why all online marketers try their hardest to adhere to its guidelines when it comes to getting sites ranked. Some even try to devise ways to get in the good side of Google so they can get a better ranking for their website.

One of the things a lot of online marketers do is to vary their anchor texts. Did you know that changing your hyperlinked texts can affect your site’s ranking.

It may not be that too much of a deal before but now that Google has implemented recent  algorithm changes that penalized sites that utilize spamming, changing the anchor text you use in all your articles can keep you from getting slapped by Google.

Why and how does this happen?

Typically, content writers use keywords as anchor texts so they can rank a certain web page higher. This may have been effective before but now it can hurt your site because Google looks for sites that have unnatural links.

Using just one keyword as an anchor text will look unnatural and it will have a negative effect. The way Google thinks is people need to naturally link to web pages and it’d be very unlikely that a lot of people would link to a website using the same word or phrases.

That’s why you have to vary your anchor texts

Let’s say you want to rank for the term “increase blog traffic” and you plan to use it as an anchor text. It’s all right to use it in, say, 2 of your articles. But make sure to vary it with the others. Use “click here” or your site’s name as the hyperlinked text. You can also use the URL itself.

Always remember to change the anchor texts. This is going to help you rank better in Google.
