Below is an excellent Review about GMO Issues and Genetically Engineered Foods.

November 4 Election Day is an excellent opportunity for Hawaiians to Vote on GMO Issues, as documented in the below article – Vote to protect your health, your families, and your land!

GMO Issues —

Please Vote with your Heart!

Genetically Modified Organisms also known as Genetically Engineered Food may contain high-risk food ingredients.  The long-term effects of eating such foods are unknown.  Education and awareness is coming from the grass roots level.

I am but a blade of grass in the worldwide lawn of nutritional education

Here’s what’s happening next, in Hawaii, the GMO seed testing capital of the world,” according to Hawaii Seed,

GMO Initiative in Maui — November 4th

A GMO Initiative will appear on the Maui ballot. The goal is gain information to determine safety, based on the outcome of discovery through a temporary moratorium.

Even though you are not a resident of Maui County, Hawaii, your awareness and “virtual support” of their upcoming vote matters. There is power in the Collective Consciousness.

This post summarizes what I learned from an online video in which Autumn Nesss explains the issues. By providing this information, I hope that our health and well being will be positively impacted.

Hawaiian Citizens and Environment At Risk

There are many research and development centers in Maui.  They test seeds that are engineered to withstand chemical use as well as all of the chemicals that go into the seeds.

The testing facilities are in the open air…upwind from where people and marine life live.  Because chemical companies have refused requests for impact studies, citizens are now speaking out, thru political platform, in the interest of safety.

The Ripple Effects

This Initiative directly effects Hawaiians, but has long tail effects for others because what sets a precedence there will likely spread to other states and countries.

Chemical Reality

Farmers who spray do so three to five times per month. The chemical companies, by contrast, are spraying three to five times per day, with chemicals that have been banned in European Union.

The EPA admits they have no idea of the effects of combining the chemicals. EPA uses information that comes from the companies that use them—not an objective, outside source with no vested interests.

The Maui Initiative is not a pesticide disclosure request.  At the ballot, people will be voting on suspension of Genetically Engineered (GE) practices in Maui county until studies confirming safety of GE practices are done and are reviewed by county council.

A Temporary Ban — with Limited Criteria

The Initiative calls for a temporary moratorium and it only relates to GE farming, which makes up only about 1% of farming in Maui.

The length of the moratorium is estimated to be about a year.

IF a farm is not growing GMO crops, the Initiative does not effect them. Nor does it effect landscapers, exterminators and or people who do not use chemicals on GMOs.  People’s yards are not going to be investigated.

Intention is Key

The Initiative only applies to people or companies who knowingly grow GMO. It is virtually impossible to “accidentally” grow GMO plants and crops.

To get a GMO seed, you need to go through a GMO distributor or a chemicals company. Generally, you are required to take a training course or be under contract with a GMO seed provider.

Ignore Scare Tactics

The goal is that future plants be non-GMO.  No “papaya or backyard police” will show up!!

Plants that are currently in growth are not impacted. People and farmers do not have to destroy already living plants or trees.

Corporate Cost$ of Choosing to Grow GMOs

If GMO companies choose to continue growing GMO seeds, the Initiative calls for those GMO companies—NOT citizens—to pay for the impact studies.

Other countries have banned GMOs — and major chemical companies have successfully readjusted.

Take Action

Vote YES if you are in Maui.  Support from afar if you are mainland or elsewhere.  This law is for the public good.

Good luck, Maui…and thank you for taking action.  It makes a difference.
