Assertive Communication Skills

Assertive Communication Skills are necessary for every individual who has a voice that needs to be heard!

Lessons To Be Learned from Sea Lions at Sea World Attractions in Orlando Florida:

  1. The persistent voice of one who has something to say.
  2. Never giving up,
  3. Believing in what you have to say.

Assertive communication skills are necessary for every person to learn, so they can communicate what they feel.

Have you struggled in communicating what you feel or want to say? Has this disability affected other parts of your life in speaking, communicating to others, or in creating new friendships?

I can empathize with your feelings.

I myself, too, have had trouble expressing what I feel, and I am discovering that there are many more people than I had realized that share in the pain of not being able to speak out.  People who have wanted to contribute, share, express, and yet have been unable to do so, for many faceted reasons.

Assertive Communication Skills:  Philosophies

Philosophies which still linger in our society which can be harmful, and need to be re-evaluated:

  • “Children are to be seen, and not heard.”
  • “You don’t know what you are talking about.”
  • You’ve been told you are “shy,” by someone you believed in, therefore you’ve adopted what they said about you as your reality… and it may not be true!  Since they were an authority figure or someone you believed in, you believed what they said about you, and adopted that philosphy into your life as part of your personality.
  • You have been “passed by” in the conversation, by more dominating or expressive communicators, and you were never able to finish saying what you meant to say.  People did not intentionally mean to hurt you, but you were passed by, nontheless.  They may have been unaware, but the ‘why’ doesn’t matter.  What matters is what you do about it.
  • Your contributions were not respected.

By the way, Verbal violence or yelling is not communication — it is domination.

Assertive Communication Skills – Recovery

But what if the thoughts, “I am not a good speaker ” were not true?  What if you are really more vocal than you realize, and are tired of being labeled ‘shy’ by your own person and standards?  What if you want to be more in your life, and have things to say, and desire to contribute more in conversations?  Does that mean your personality is permanently set, and you are who you are for the rest of your life?

I want to let you know with a resounding NO, that what you were yesterday or for your life time, is NOT what you have to be today or for the rest of your future life!

What happened in your past and the influences are not your fault, but they are your responsibility.

Assertive Communication Skills: Beginning Solutions

To begin a new path of asserting yourself in communicating you should start with:

  • Becoming aware of when you are not sharing in conversations
  • Begin to take charge of your life
  • Decide you will contribute in the moment
  • Decide today to communicate better
  • Say what is on your heart
  • Speak louder; insist with assertivness on contributing
  • Know that there is no ‘perfect’; just begin practicing
  • Be the person who finds their voice
  • Be heard.

Just like the Sea Whales communicated, were insistent, and did not stop…  do the same!

Assertive Communication Skills – 10Tips:

  1. You have the right to be heard.
  2. You have the right to be heard, and without being mocked, belittled or humiliated.
  3. You must be honest with yourself in that you’ve allowed philosophies and the opinions of others to control you, and be molded into where you are currently today.
  4. It is not other’s fault; do not blame others.  It is your responsibility to take charge of your personal life.
  5. Be pro-active in your life.  Take personal charge and action.
  6. As you begin to assert your thoughts, opinions and ideas in a conversation, or as a speaker, don’t be surprised if those who are used to you not expressing yourself in conversation, notice, and comment (even negatively), about your assertiveness.
  7. What is more important, though?  Worrying about what others say, or being TRUE to yourself, and thereby being happier for it!
  8. Don’t live small; it hurts you, and others who were meant to benefit from you really being yourself.  Play big.
  9. Are you open to Self Development Courses to get on a journey of personal success?
  10. Review the Sea Whales above to learn lessons on just “doing it”; you can be heard!

Hope you enjoyed this “Assertive Communication Skills” video of the very assertive Sea Lions!
