Techniques Used in Aluminum Castings

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

There exist two main techniques that can be used in aluminum castings. They are namely ingot and mould casting. In the first stage, the metal is rolled into small slabs then wired into bars. These bars are then transformed into partly or fully complete product. The secondary stage is used to convert the metal into cast finished products.

Molding is generally divided into several groups. To begin with, sand molding is one of the most adopted methods where reused and permanent repetitions are used to make sand moulds. Among the most important procedures in this method are the preparation stage and the bonding stage. Melted metal is forced to melt at low pressure allowing formation of thinner walls.

Die method is another common style used. In the one, the mould is usually never destroyed during the process but reserved permanently. It is a cheap method to make metals like iron or steel. This one also has several categories. The high pressure die molding is the widely used. The gravity and low pressure ones are no common.

In the squeeze forming, a liquid metal is poured into the open die then closed. At the final closure stage, they fluid are allowed to run further into the die. At this level, the viscosity of the fluid is not very necessary because the displacement is minimal. This is the best method to use when making alloys.

For the vacuum die forming, the working principal is almost the same as for the low pressure one. The only difference is that the pressure inside is greatly reduced by a vacuum machine. This creates a huge pressure difference between the inside and the outside environment. This in turn forces thee metal liquid to enter.

Aluminum castings are very strong and versatile methods for producing perfect finished products with entertaining shapes. The different methods are continuously improving and constantly transforming to meet the general preferences of many people. They are among the best and cheap ways of coming up with metal alloys which are in turn applicable in many fields.
