In a world where the development and production of new electronic devices is exhibiting a constant exponential growth a new catch phrase is also gaining popularity and the term is “electronics recycling”. The word electronics recycling simply means to re-use old or obsolete electrical or electronic devices. It can also refer to the harvesting of the components present in a broken down electrical or electronic devices that can be re-processed and use on another device. Currently, a worldwide clamor for such type of recycling is being embraced by a lot of people and their communities. And below are some of the most common and sensible advantages of doing electronics recycling.
It saves our environment
The practice of electronics recycling prevents landfills from filling up since most of the unwanted electronic devices from households and offices now find their way into recycling centers instead of the local dump sites. This prevents the need to create a new landfill since the existing one does not immediately get full. Another method that this type of recycling is able to save our environment is it prevents hazardous and sometimes toxic elements such as Mercury, Cadmium and Lead from contaminating the ground and possibly even that of any ground water source passing directly under the dump site. Furthermore, it also saves our own lives as well since it also averts our exposure and maybe even consumption of these harmful chemicals that can cause various sicknesses and even death.
It saves our resources
This recycling activity also makes use of components taken from broken or outdated electronic equipment, which are then used as replacement part for other gadgets or machinery thereby eliminating the need to produce new ones using another batch of raw materials. Stripping down the individual components of a device and then harvesting the chemical elements in it so that it can be re-engineered and used in the production of new components is an additional way of saving the limited resources found in our environment especially since some of these elements are exhaustible. Some of these are precious metals like gold and copper.
It allows us to do charity
Electronics recycling also gives us the opportunity to donate our old and unwanted electrical or electronic devices to our less fortunate brethren. It is said that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure, which is why that old computer that you are about to throw out from your bedroom window may actually mean a lot to a young kid whose school has very limited computers requiring two or three of her fellow students to share a same PC. There will always be orphanages, schools and non-governmental institutions that will gladly accept your gifts of outdated personal computers. They can also point you in the right direction regarding other institutions that also accepts such type of donation.
More than ever, our effort to save the world and the future through activities like that of electronic recycling is already gaining momentum. Armed with the knowledge about its advantages, be sure to share the information to as many people as you can so they too will go for it.
