How the Carabinieri Lost Claudia to the Clowns

Claudia was a model policewoman before giving up the career the pension and the glory to be a clown.
Claudia Cantone is a woman who has been performing now for three and a half years as a professional woman- clown.
Before that she was a registered officer in the Constabulary of Roma in the Italian police force.
Although a respected officer and with a flawless record as a policewoman Claudia never really felt the comitment to be a cop like her father. Always something lacking….
Then in Galicia not long after the year 2000 she attended clown workshops with Jango Edwards and later myself. The raw and anarchic life a clown- a trade which encourages the nurturing of imagination, rather order and following the orders of superiors- attracted her immediately and she took the step to resign from the force.
I first met her in a festival in Monte San Justo south of Ancona, Italy. She had just performed with her female partner clown, told me she was a cop. My jaw dropped.and I thought there is hope for the planet yet – a cop doing clowning?
It reminded me of a workshop performance in the 80s in Aarhus Denmark when a plain clothes cop suddenly shone light on the future of my world.
This cop had orders that we should perform only in one place which was completely deserted. We decided to move up stream to a busy shopping area. We were performing for 15 minutes with a large crowd of Danes of all ages in a circle.Suddenly he appeared in a blue shiny jerkin flashing his badge and asking us to move on down to where we should be. The crowd booed loudly but we returned to the same spot to where now some people were following us.
Then about 10 minutes later suddenly he arrived as were performing chimpanzees and scattered about 10 bananas to us – primates-in-action.. This was a moment of real connection as the cop has actually ended supporting us.
For Claudia it was the same – her police colleagues also gave her full support on her last day wishing her well in her new path.
Police are not necessarily the ugly side of authority that we witness all too often. They can like other individuals sense the moment of empowering and this is all too important in our over-crowded and complex society.
